Tell them to look on the left side of the road?

I would have but I was struggling to breathe through the cigarette smoke.

Wasn't Datamail also responsible for a horrible screwup on behalf of Studylink a few years ago, too?

Datacom I think you'll find. Although both have NZ Post as a significant shareholder though IIRC.

Datamail are the dominant player in the print and mailhouse space but have been looking to expand into other areas as snail mail decreases.

Also, if last night's experience at Manuka was anything to go by, Devonport's official language is now German.

Weird, I was asked for directions to Devonport by a German couple in a camper van who were lost in darkest Grey Lynn yesterday...

They were remarking about the lack of road signs in this country.

  • Hard News: Auckland: where only one man votes,

I think that's for us to decide

No it's not, if the guy says his views are his own I think you have to accept that.

At least he stuck to the topic, the relevance of Norman and Malcolm Douglas' political affiliations to this debate is a little tenuous isn't it ?

If it looks like a Duck and Quacks like a Duck then it could be a member of the ACT Party.

Unless of course if it's a Mallard.

That $35 million figure for the IT systems sounds extremely optimistic to me. I'd multiply it by 10.

I can't find the orginal online but one of the articles below in the hard copy Hearld had a diagram listing all the systems by functional area across the 8 councils and there wasn't much commonality.

A single system migration to merge the billing/rating systems of 2 councils would be massive on it's own but x 7. Good luck

Even if they used the same software (which they don't in many cases) they will be configured differently to support the different rules for each council.

On the upside, the IT community in Auckland is wetting itself in anticipation.

Examples, Transpower have churned through $9.5 million of $18 million working out it was going to be hard to replace their billing system. Contact budgetting $80 mllion to replace its one.

I just can't see them doing the Super City for $35mill or anywhere close to it.

  • Hard News: Hell's Bells,

They sounded good from Point Chevalier – and, I am told, Mt Albert, Kingsland and a number of other suburbs.

Yet we couldn't hear a thing only 500m away in Westmere. I had to get on my bike and ride up to Old Mill Road. It was nowhere as loud as I was expecting even there.

All the action was in West View Rd, locals selling *tickets* into their backyards for between $15 - $25 and a brawl broken up by about 25 police.

  • Hard News: Do Want?,

I'm no Apple Fanboy but I reckon I'll get an IPad.

I'll get the non 3G version with the larger storage, probably wait until the 2nd release. I reckon they'll put a USB port on it and maybe a camera.

It'll sit in it's cradle on top of the stereo, it act as one of those digital photo frames while not being used, my music repository and I can quickly browse the net if I want to look something up quickly. If they put a camera in it I'll be able to skype from it.

Not sure about the book reader thing unless they have a waterproof version for the bath.

I can browse the web on the PS3 now but it's clunky, the laptop is a pain in the arse because invariably the battery's flat and it needs to be plugged in and put away afterwards.

  • Field Theory: The Sad News Springboks,

I've never seen a movie/TV program yet with a simulated/re-created game of Rugby that looked realistic.

There's something about the game they just can't capture.

The most disturbing thing about this thread is the discovery that some people think that @seven was anything other than a puerile, painful, cringingly unfunny waste of space. I'd much rather have Simpsons re-runs: hell, even re-runs of Melody Rules would be better.

I agree Tom, and my own children were on the show...
