  • Hard News: Problems,

Two Australians don't like NZ. This is a crisis!

It's OK, they're only Tasmanians. Remember, if Tasmania can maintain its minuscule positive population growth, it'll reach half a million by the end of this century. Which, I believe, was the population of Auckland in 1965.

    Stephen Nails It Again

    Heh! True.
The Scientific Facts are no doubt correct, but as always they're a work in progress, rather than holy writ delivered from on high. And the scolding tone doesn't help. Academia is part of the solution to the problem, it doesn't own it.

Also, if anyone's really interested in taking the anti-obesity message out there into the darker reaches of the web, the really fat kids are the ones with the skull avatars.

  • Hard News: Problems,

You have to read the story to get a full sense of how, er, distinctive Icelandic gender politics is.

Like, the bit about Bjork being mad, just like her mother. No mention of her dad, though.

  • Stories: Hotels,

The Constellation in Vientiane, Laos, in 1975. Immortalised by John Le Carre in The Honourable Schoolboy , but since fallen on harder times. Half a bloodstained sheet on the bed, and the hand-held shower head detached right in your hand. Presumably the rumoured CIA bugs planted in the walls were equally disfunctional. It was rumoured that ladies of the local diplomatic corps who donated their castoffs to the one thrift shop in town could have the rare experience of seeing their expensive threads recycled by the local ladyboys. An interesting slice in time.

  • Random Play: You wouldn’t read about it.,

I did 4 units of a law degree waaay back in the 1960s and wound up with a profound appreciation for Common Law and 'our' (essentially, English-based case & statute) law system- and worries.

"In my youth," said his father, "I took to the law
And argued each case with my wife:
And the muscular strength, which it gave to my jaw,
Has lasted the rest of my life."
    - Lewis Carroll

Interesting thread. Having wasted my academic years on frivolous subjects, I now realise that I'm shamefully flaccid on these things.

  • Busytown: No news is good news,

All we need is an A3 4 page daily newspaper.

Yay for tiny little tabloids - plenty of opportunity for those fortuitous juxtapositions between the headlines of the front & back page when spread out to be read on public transport, like the 1960s example, either the Sydney Mirror or Telegraph , when Harold Holt drowned. The front page had Search For PM's Body Continues, while the back sports page had an interview with boxer Rocky Gattelari, with the headline I'm Not Washed Up Yet.

  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

Nor should you. This is a democracy after all.

No worries, Ben - as you might recall, when murmurings were raised a while back about arch-boomer J. Tizard's eligibility to be rendered down for soylent green, Mr. Brown mounted a spirited defence.
