  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

again, for sure. I can only discuss my experience.

everyone brings their own when they're writing, as well as that of the contact list they have assembled.

it all comes down to time and i guess a sense of responsibility to your audience, as with everything, that will differ widely if not wildly.

but I'm not here to defend my work mates, I'm just waiting for a lift.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

yeah, sure, but I think we're talking about different things here. I was replying to danielle's 'knowing history' line.

for mine, life experience is far more useful when you're face to face with the mother of a dead child than an understanding of what some French philosopher has to say on deconstructionalism.

in the end most of what we do is the seemingly simple task of relaying someone's personal story.

as for taking that on a more eclectic contextual bent, well that's a luxury deadlines don't always provide. as far as I'm concerned play a straight bat.

as for what danielle was referring to, the most dangerous situation is often when someone is writing about something they think they know pat. that way lies the tar pits.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

just keeping it real - it's impossible to know the background of every story you're asked to write.

oddly enough, not even the most clever clogs of journos is a card carrying mastermind on every subject they're tossed at.

    couldn't agree more Russell.

history and context can be dug from our archive, nous and empathy have to be learned yourself.

  • Hard News: Quantum Faster,

I saw him do his thang at the Town Hall - a full bloody house it was too.

can't quite remember, but he was deconstructing some French phrase - did everything put put the poor thing in a figure four leg lock.

    as for us...

    millions died.

lummie, what happened to casual Friday?

I'd've loved some grandiose philosophising on my course, Wtgn Poly 1995, but really other than shorthand - praise be - we were more focused on how you avoid being sued.

but short courses such as mine have to be focussed on practical isses - you can be as up to speed on lofty notions as you like, but if you can't write to space and deadline you're dead weight.

for mine, I try not to complicate things. just present everyone's best argument and let someone else figure out the score.

the wierd thing about that is how often people reach completely opposite conclusions from the most straight forward stories.

I had a nasty feeling when we enforced for the follow on, we were just begging them to come out with the extra wide bats and close up shop.

surely the best way to get into the Indians is to pander to their egos, they're used to being treated as rock stars so why not offer them a juicy target? I don't think they could have helped themselves.

anyway, that's what I was thinking as I finishing off some renovations - painting ain't painting unless there's cricket on the wireless.

as for a target, given the pitch, I don't see how you could leave them with much under 500 to chase. that's plenty, but I wouldn't put too much on them not to make it.
