  • Up Front: Choice, Bro,

I really don't get it, even if it is a "choice" why should anyone oppose the right for marriage for all? Aside from just being small minded bigots, it just doesn't make sense to me.

(please note, I don't believe sexual preference is a choice, I just don't understand why it makes a difference)

  • Up Front: Let's Talk About Sex, Baby,

I don't know if it really counts as blogging as such, but I think http://www.avclub.com/features/savage-love/ does a pretty good job at times. Not sure if he is "straight" as such though (the July 18 column has a very funny opening letter).

  • Hard News: The not-so-Evil Empire,

Apple’s devices and the services attached to them do generally just work.

I have to disagree on this point, in my personal experience Apple's devices work as long as you stick to the workflows that their designers have thought of. As soon as you step outside of those workflows everything breaks horribly and is nearly impossible to get working right again.

A perfect example is the iPads before IOS5, needing a computer running iTunes to run a tablet WTF. That it took 2-3 major revisions of software before they fixed that is horrific.

iTunes is banned from all of my personal computers due to the way the updates have opt out items hidden behind other buttons (ie It always tries (until I just got rid of it) to install Bonjour and Safari, and Bonjour goes and deletes any 802.1x certificates you have attached to your network interfaces, so yay that pc can't connect to any network that has port based authentication turned on, or wireless networks that use certificates). Now this may have changed but I simply don't trust Apple anymore.

  • Hard News: Do you like what we've done…,

Its looking really good, but please fix the typekit errors, It looked like the earlier image to me, and I had to force myself to read the thread to work out what was wrong (it looks like something is conflicting with cleartype as it seems to be all sorts of aliasing errors, as I am stuck on XP at the office, it would probably be fine on a more modern OS).

  • Radiation: This Is Not My Dan Carter,

I think its quite good that we get fairly benign things on our news, my japanese wife finds it quite refreshing that the nightly news is a bunch of stories all jazzed up to make everything seem much worse than it is. In Japan the news is all about on-goning corruption and real problems, here they often run the puff peice about some random animal etc.

And just because I love community so much, heres one of the many great moments.

  • Radiation: This Is Not My Dan Carter,

Make sure you catch up on "Better off Ted" a really fantastic show that has some fantastic commedic patter going at times (canceled after the 2nd season) and "Community" which is a lot more funny than I expected.

  • Hard News: Catching up with the future…,

I tried to watch the streaming from my ps3, and to be honest even the "high" option doesn't have enough data to display nicely full screen. When it is at the default size sitting in a box in the middle of the screen it is ok (but whats the point of that), and once maxmised it looks terrible and gives me a headache, so until they get it streaming at 720p levels I won't be using it.

Its a fantastic concept but is just hobbled by the limitations currently.

  • Hard News: Do Want?,

It looks like it does lots of things really well, but as I would only want or use 1-2 of its functions, it is far too expensive for what it would provide me in utility. Thats not to say it can't provide a good amount of utility to other people though.

But the cost benefit analyis falls too far on the cost side for me to consider it these days.

  • Hard News: Space for Ol Dat I See,

I have been cycle commuting for 8 months now, and so far it has saved me around $1200 in bus fares. The only problems have been due to where I live, I have to choose between dominon rd (deathride for cyclists) or Mt Eden Road (which is mostly fine, but does have some crazies that stand at the side of the road and make gun hand signs at cyclists along with pew pew sounds). I would love a nice belt drive bike, but I find they don't have the gear options I would want (currently running a 36T at the front and a 18T at the back, which means through blind luck I don't need a tensioner with my vert dropouts).

I would love to continue riding in, but when my lease expires I will need to look at finding a place closer in to town, so I can walk in, as it is still far too dangerous to ride in auckland, with lots of drivers thinking that death is the correct punishment for simply being on the roads.

  • Up Front: Outraged of Sockburn,

For some reason I can never get into big bang theory, I guess the years of watching great british comedys (coupling, etc) means that I just can't stomach laughter tracks anymore. Unless its a standup/talk/guest show I don't need to hear what the audience found funny. And I sure don't need that harpy screaching away as well (there are always one or two laughs that are just painful).

The good stuff these days always seems to be semi serious with dry humour on top (that could just be my tastes though), so chuck, castle and the amazing race tend to be all I need for my commedy fixes.

But due to various circumstances Japanese drama shows tend to be getting some more viewing time, and most of them are remarkably good.
