  • Hard News: Mint Chicks win everything,

There's nothing wrong with people constantly advertising who and what they are, even if everyone around them already knows

Yeah, but Ben, it sounds like you're still assuming that everyone who's camp is gay and everyone who's not camp is straight. This may not necessarily be the case.

Or you could just watch John Barrowman and Simon Amstell have a gay-off on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and set some stereotypes in stone.

  • Hard News: Reading Material,

Screw the RWC, bugger The Booker here's something to have a patriotic geek-gasm over:

OMG! I was already solidly on board from the Simon Pegg thing, but that's just... genius.

Bones also was responsible for several of "Trek's" catchphases, including "He's dead, Jim" and "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a ...," ending in a profession in which he had no training.

Except my very, very favourite "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not an escalator".

  • Southerly: Energy Special, Part 3:…,

On the other hand, I think (without claiming too much) that it is mildly interesting and mildly informative to look at history through the lens of energy. But, of course, as a former energy engineer, I would think that...

Which is exactly why it's so gosh-darned interesting, because specialists in Classical history all tend to be coming at it from an arts background. The different perspective is enormously interesting. I remember my classics teacher at varsity showing us an early steam engine they'd found in excavations from the Hellenic Egyptian period - it was used to make a circle of toy dolphins spin round. I think they used steam in temples to make doors mysteriously open and close, too, but I'm trying to remember back an embarrassing number of years now. But there was obviously a mental block with using other technologies rather than a technological one.

  • Hard News: Copyright Abuse,

So THAT's the reason LOTR is crap....!

Oh, I'm so not getting sucked into THAT argument again. (But it is.) But that may be the reason there are no girls in the Fellowship.

    However.

It's like making a contest of breastfeeding, or gargling.

I'm not sure how, neither of those things being bloody hard work. But I do agree that literature isn't empirically 'good' or 'bad' but just a matter of taste, except when it's really, really execrable.

A gentle reminder that fiction means made up. It's all baloney, however nicely sliced.

Yeah, but there's a difference between a portrayal that allows you to suspend disbelief and get really involved, and one that makes you call Bollocks straight off. Some authors are very good at presenting a very different headspace from their own, and some are absolutely terrible.

A reminder to exercise our own capacity for empathy.

Which I think is what makes the difference.

  • Hard News: Copyright Abuse,

Otherwise its like saying Lord of the Rings is crap cause Tolkein wasn't a hobbit.

I know grrl Role-players who used to get dead upset any time a guy wanted to play a female character. Dwarf, fine, wizard, whatever, super-stealthy gorgeous poncy Elven Ranger, just dandy. But they don't know what it's like to be a woman...

Errr, I'm pretty sure it would hurt to be dragged over hot coals, especially if you were an unwilling participant.

We can find out, after we get the fetters on Daniel Carter.

And then we could totally do barbeque. Choice.

And not so sweet girls play Roller Derby

My daughter would LOVE that. I was happy enough with hockey - all the violence of netball AND they gave me a weapon.

But srsly. Girls play netball. A "non-contact" sport. You wanna know how to take out a player with your back to them and without using your arms? Ask a netballer.

Oh, and look, the MSM is catching up with us. Women do like rugby after all, how sweet.

  • Yellow Peril: My black heart bleeds,

which was hilariously reviewed in the Guardian.

Guardian Books is bloody brilliant. Their Digested Reads unmissably so.

Well according to Tom, that would put Dan Carter in the team. And I'm sure most of the team won't complain about that, for numerous reasons, but some people are going to be saying 'Ring In!'.

Okay, so we need to handicap him in some way. Maybe we could tie his hands behind his back. I hear we have some fetters.
