Still on ACC, would you believe it...

The issue also met with condemnation from the Employers and Manufacturers' Federation, which issued a statement opposing a repeat of the 1999 exercise, saying employers were wary. Its health and safety manager Paul Harvie said 1999 had turned into a bun fight between insurers offering artificially low premiums to try to shore up their market share.

  • Hard News: Getting Across,

Depends if Labour can get the message through that ACC's not actually in straits as dire as has been portrayed, except by the magic of accounting jiggery-pokery, and that applying some different accounting jiggery-pokery will present a rather different picture. So far they're not doing a very good job, though, and one does have to wonder if it's not partly aided by Goff's known right-wing proclivities.

Maybe all they have to do is invoke the spectre of American-style HMO's.

And the 'corporate welfare for polluters' angle is fertile ground too.

Given that the workers' account is the only part of ACC that's self-funding, we're yet again seeing the "privatise the profits, socialise the losses" mentality at work. Hat-tip to my brother for pointing that bit out. Strip out the bit that pays its own way, and leave the taxpayer to prop up the unprofitable parts. Fucking typical.

The insurance industry lobby seems to have its fingerprints all over it. I'd be rubbing my hands in glee if I was an ambulance chaser.

As an aside, I've had to deal with insurance politics on behalf of customers whose machines were zapped by Zeus or stolen.

  • Hard News: Getting Across,

I heard some stunning approval rating figure cited on Natradio yesterday for Our John. 60%? But I can't think of anything the bugger's done to deserve it.

I just can't imagine who would want to own ACC.

The ambulance chaser industry, of course!

  • Hard News: Safer Communities Together,

But what street in what NZ city is at 0.49? I can't figure it out.

Looks like Queen St to me. Definitely not in Wellywood.

We are, once again, being taken for suckers. As for the motorcyclists. Who is it that causes the most motorcycle accidents?
car drivers. And those bloody cyclists...

In an ideal world, ACC vehicle premiums would be weighted against truckies and suburban assault vehicles. But no, the RTF et al make doubly sure it'll never happen.

  • Field Theory: It's really a dick-move,

Yeah, I'm with Richard. The '82 World Cup gave us kids the courage to stand up to our rugby-loving dads in rugby-mad small-town NZ and enter a soccer team in the inter-school competition. It was a glorious time for football.

Also, the 1981 Tour was still fresh in NZers' minds, so rugby wasn't exactly the flavour of the month at the time.

PS. Couldn't attend Civil Offence due to yet another schedule clash. That's the downside of having so many events in Wellywood.
