  • Hard News: Reviews: #NZGT and the Herald, in reply to John Armstrong,

    The Beginthewordning...*

Restructing is a perfectly cromulent word.

Oh, but I see they (The Herald on-line) don't bother 'restructing' american spellings, so sombre stays as somber nowadays on overseas feeds, saves time and money...

Damn these neologisms, when will it all settle down to Galactic Standard?

    - admittedly Fairfax does a similar sort of uncaring thing, as they seem to run the original unsubbed (ie older) text of stories on-line, which leads to divergence between print edition and on-line versions.
Personally that seems counterintuitive to the alleged immediacy of web news, and leaves the least reliable version of a story as the only one available for on-line searching, reinforcing an error perhaps?
Sure post-subbing the copy may have been cut to fit a space but it has at least been filtered for obvious (and not so obvious) errors, grammar and correctness, subs check things (apparently, a recent revelation to American journalists)- this way lies confusion at best, and litigation at worst, perhaps modern paper publishers can live with that...

    The knowledge of all fonts...

the curvey parts of the font (I’m sure there must be a fancy word for them)

Meet: shoulder, bowl, swash, tail and terminal

  • Hard News: Reviews: #NZGT and the Herald, in reply to Peter Calder,

    Does any one care, indeed...

In the old days in Herald features there was a sub...

...not one who looks at website headlines I guess, judging by this...

    every picture tells a story...

...original graphics (by novelist Chad Taylor)

speaking of Mr Chad Taylor, he has recently put together some e-book Kindle editions of his earlier books...
...and at least one of which has a cover by <cough> moi.

    wagging the dog...

    It seems someone stole them.

I believe only one was stolen, and the other two are in council storage, though I can't find a link to corroborate that. I do note that plans are afoot to redo the bronze beast from scratch...

  • Speaker: How the Key transcription gaffe…,

    Still some wriggle room...

After all, they are all made of people who put their trousers on one leg at a time.

Hmmmm... doesn't that leave you with only a 50/50 chance of getting the fly facing the right way?
I also know people who eschew standing, and pull both legs on from a sitting start, sometimes boots 'n' all!
What we need is a some kind of strident Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press of good standing to report all this for us... oh hang on...

  • Speaker: How the Key transcription gaffe…, in reply to Phil Lyth,

    ears lookin’ at you kid…

I am still surprised he found
    my mention of his name

Perhaps a Vacuum Tube system from Waihopai to back room of US Embassy, filternet… + context parsing… + flag for immediate action!
GCSB finally does something useful (for New Zealand)…

  • Hard News: We ... WHAT!?,

    Outrageous Importunity…
Apparently this is just more outrage from that ‘Russel Brown’ who gets outraged at everything (according to one obviously knowledgeable commenter) – Fairfax get in with a story of their own – while adding to the disinformation theme by misspelling Russell’s name, sigh….

  • Up Front: Choice, Bro, in reply to Paul Williams,

... are you both saying Key’s attendance at events like the Big Gay Out etc is entirely narcissistic?

Not I, mine was more a musing aside (apropos publicity) about people's casual invocation of the phrase, seemingly without realising what it says about their need for notice....
And I'm sure Key's been sent there for very good demographic reasons by his marketing dept.

    Chinese whispers...
In this case it looks like they got the 'New Zild" translators and reality adjusters involved as well - Now if we could just get a copy of the original speech from the PM's office and compare the State Department transcript side by side...
You'd think the PM's 'people' would give the State Dept 'people' a copy of his speech after the fact, for the record.

I'd love to know what the inaudible bits were, and how long they were ...

Key really owes it to the world of diplomacy (and future generations) to improve his diction and to slow down when he talks - it's not like he's some wideboy FX dealer any more, trying to rush through some shonky multi-million dollar deal before the margins change or someone notices the fine print...
    ...oh!
    Hang on...

Planet “any publicity is good publicity”. It’s a sad planet...

...true, I've never understood why people so readily trot out Oscar Wilde's hoary old chestnut; "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about." when it is so obviously a paean to rampant Narcissism...
