  • Southerly: Could the Mysterious…,

    Really interesting
And it will be even more interesting to see how this would balence out in energy terms ie energy needed to produce charcoal, carbon released into the atmosphere compared with carbon locked up in the soil
And even more importantly how the deep burying of charcoal would effect the fertility of the various soil types in New Zealand especially the cropping types

  • Hard News: Some actual politics,

Thank you for the correction Kyle, I did not know that, blame poor teaching of NZ history in my youth
But I think you know what I meant...the first elected PM

I/S, I was not refering about his sexual oreintation (who cares) but the fact that he has 7 children (again who cares) but it is rather a larger number than the norm

It is interesting that quite a few observers noted that pre European Maori did not hit their children. It was noted with amazement actually
Just something else that has degraded Maori life since colonization despit what the red necks say

  • Hard News: Some actual politics,

Well I for one would like to see the spot light on Shane Jones
On paper he seems like a prospect for our first Maori PM
Inteligent etc although on checking it seems he has never had a real job (not on the government tit) but that may just be missiing from his labour bio. His dad was a farmer so it seems likely he knows what work look like
He has been a good breeder
On the other hand his parlimentary behaviour has been less than stellar
There was the business of him double dipping and then that statement that it was ok to use the unions as a labour cash cow
    So bring it on

  • Hard News: Awful in more than one way,

    Good post Russell
    A couple of points though
Interesting that here in NZ the killings were imediatly linked by the media to more gun control
I might add it is easier to buy a firearm here (once you have the necessary paper work) than in just about any US state
I think that Virginia has one of the most lax set of laws
And I am lead to believe if you want an ilegal one here that is not to difficult either
In the course of studying the US firearms culture I have come across reference to it being considered normal (where legal) to carry a concealled firearm everywhere including Sunday church. A bit hard for us to get our head around that
But I do note that these killing took place in one of the very few places in Virginia that had a gun free culture
As you note this just right outside our experience even though we are a country that has a culture of using and owning firearms. I think the difference as that we tend to use them against animals and not people

  • Hard News: The Civility Code,

Well I for one asked Russell when he would allow coments, mostly so there could be some two way response
He responded on why that wasn't posible at that time and I am very pleased on how PA has changed since commnets have been possible
And oh yes I would consider myself right wing compared with most of you

  • Island Life: Who's laughing?,

Heh - amidst the faintly righteous back-slapping about how tolerant we are in comparison to other blogs (and rightly so), I feel a little unease about sentiments aimed at 'limiting these dicks' - even though dicks some of them most truly are ......

Like anyone who dares to questionthe liberal/left leaning of this forum
Thanks, "merc" for the nice little clever racist dig you got in when I dared do that

  • Hard News: Public Address Radio,

Mark Burton was meant to be taking his medication and was meant to be supervised when he travelled a considerable distance to hunt down his mother and quite brutally kill her
Six years later he is in a smilar position although this time I hope the authorities are really are keeping him up to the mark
Good on his dad suporting him but just imagine the headlines if anything had happened. I am just glad he is your neighbourhood and not mine

On a happier note great news about the Saturday radio show it will liven up a slow time of the week

  • Hard News: The Arguments,

Well i have just changed my mind on this
I had felt that once in a blue moon a light smack is needed in the raising of children, usually delivered in anger but in a controlled way
I feel this will continue and to make a law making this ilegal is illogical as it would criminalise what most parents feel is normal behaviour

But I was wondering how often section 59 had been used as a defence so followed the link given above http://www.barnardos.org.nz/AboutUs/repeal_incourt.asp
Well worth a read if you are a supporter, quite horrifying in my mind

  • Hard News: More party pill palaver,

I am not into drugs legal or ilegal, in fact I cannot really understand why people take them. I was going to say I despise drug takers but that is too harsh, I just don't understand

That said I feel the country would be far better off if drugs were decrimilised. I really cannot see any serious down side and plenty of up side
And as for really young people taking hard drugs, so what, they are apparently already available if you want them (and have the cash)
The Courts would be freed up and the Police could spend time tracking down real criminals who no doubt are those who are already clients but maybe we could really deal to them

  • Island Life: Staring into space,

Now, now Greg, not many if any subsidies left in NZ farming

And as for jumping to conclusions guess what I did when you used the phrase"unreclaimed externalities " and I checked your address

But I leave this farm in far better heart than it was, with an absolute minimium of waste and enough trees to soak up my share of my carbon footprint and probably yours

And I had a better Christmas than you can imagine
