I'm trying to find an argument which links gambling to cigarettes. In theory at least, I would like cigarettes to be made completely illegal, on the basis that they provide no benefits at all, either to the user or others, are addictive, and cause a great deal of harm, both to the user and people around them.

That definitely sounds like pokies to me...

However, for a night out at the casino or day at the races, then, as you said :

That probably makes it more like alcohol.

Many people enjoy it, but it destroys the life of those who abuse it (and their families).

I too would like to see cigarettes and gambling not exist in our society, but prohibiting them just makes them available for criminals to make money out of.

(I always liked the idea of increasing the minimum age at which you can buy cigarettes by 1 year each year).

  • Hard News: High Times,

Yeah, whenever I read about a correlation being used to justify a causation theory, I always remember :

    "Eating ice cream causes drownings"

There is an extremely high correlation between days of high ice cream consumption and days of a high number of drownings :-).

  • Southerly: Energy Special, Part 4: How…,

When I read this I wondered if this accounted for the large number of windmills in The Netherlands, ie an alternative power source to wood, since coal was not available.

But a bit of googling shows that not to be the case. It's the fact that 50% of The Netherlands is below sea level that caused their widespread use of windmills.

  • Speaker: Vote Grey Warbler,

Heh. I just discovered the Grey Warbler this year. Camping at Wenderholm with lots of trilling little birds of fantail size (but not plumpness). Wasn't sure what they were at the time, but looked them up as soon as I got home. I've been bush-walking since I was in primary school, but I don't recall encountering them before. I wonder if they've not been so common in the north ?

Well-deserved bird of the year though.

I also think the Ruru (morepork) is under-recognised as well. Perhaps next year's candidate ?

  • Speaker: Quantum Competition,

Hey, a France - Argentina final would have a certain symmetry to it - first and last game of the tournament.

  • Hard News: Connecting the Box,

Figured you'd be there Russell. My wife and I had a sweepstake on which of us would spot you first - but neither of us did :-(.

Saw several other PA denizens though.

Had a great night - these reunion gigs are bloody brilliant : Newmatics, Hello Sailor, The Blams. I am fervently hoping to see Citizen Band and The Swingers doing reunion gigs sometime.

    Cheers,
    Brent.
