Remember this gem from Saatchi's seven years ago? Auckland only gets the best from Kevin.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

it did work, but wasn't enough to put National over the top

Indeed. It did work, but didn't work enough. And so, the game has changed back - I hope. I guess we'll see...

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

Oh, I was totally just ready to pop in with a short guest post out of retirement, because I was just so goddam provoked like the weakling I am. I'll just keep my comments here...

Firstly, politicians and journalists who feel a bit persecuted as a result of their own stupid actions should really just STFU with the "media rape" talk. It insults real survivors of rape and it makes them look deluded.

You may notice the ironic online sidebar to the Coddington article, actually referring to Winston Peters: 'related nzherald links: John Armstrong: When all else fails, play the victim card.'

I can't tell from Coddington's 'apology' article which category I fall under - the offended community members to whom she is apologising? Or the sadistic media bandwagon gang-rapists who will never be happy, because you offended them again by calling them gang-rapists? Keith and Charles Mabbett, who were at the panel session Coddington writes of, are in the same boat. We all had a hand in the media responses *and* the actual complaints. Keith is now working for his very own [Redacted Place] so perhaps cannot inform us whether Coddington greeted him at the panel discussion with a cheery "Sorry, ya Chinky rapist." It would be interesting to hear about the context.

It'd also be nice to be gracious at this point, as Coddington clearly thinks she is being gracious (rather than deluded and self-serving). "I wish I'd never written that article..." she writes plaintively. The reason? "...because I unwittingly pressed a button which unleashed the toxic nature of this country." Okay then. Good.

    Wait a minute.

New Zealanders prefer to abuse, either anonymously on selected blogsites, talkback radio or via email those they may never have met, but harbour a visceral hatred of. It is, indeed, their right and I have to take it on the chin...

Oh. I see. She's sorry that she unleashed an orgy of hatred... directed against her! Not against Asians! No wonder she's sorry. She should have just said: "I wish I'd never written that article...Because I didn't get away with it."

It's hard to get all the way through a Coddington column, but the last line is worth quoting:

    "...do haters have no soul?"

    Dude, emo.

Coddington's plaintive, rained-on-kitten call for media sanity and kumbayahs all round is part of a broader murmur I'm hearing from abroad - that this election is shaping up 'dirty'. Secret taping, leaks, media 'pack-rapes', sabotage of billboard grammar... You know what? This is fine by me.

Last election was dirty because politicians were targeting vulnerable sections of the population. Maori. Immigrants. Solo mothers. Somehow, amazingly, it didn't work. So this time around, they're beating up each other instead. Well and good; just leave the people be.

  • Field Theory: Disco Tom,

Willis then spoke about being almost a missionary as he represented the "western" world against the might of the African distance runner. The man didn't just win a medal, he gave half the world hope.

Where do you even start? "Almost a missionary"? To, like, Africa? That's almost, uh... metaphorical?

Maybe in exchange for all that hope, the "western" world can start forking over some of those G8 pledges from 2005...

This wasn't me, by the way. In case anyone's wondering.

Funny that Gareth Shute and salvia should all come together on Public Address - Gareth sourced my first legal mail-order try of salvia when we were flatting together years ago, which we got just out of curiosity. I recall becoming convinced for ten minutes, as I lay on my bed, that the room's horizontal axis was in fact vertical, that I could walk out onto the wall, and that I had been clearly living in a Gravitron my whole life. And then it went away. 10-15 minutes is about it. What kind of substantive anti-social behaviour can you accomplish in that amount of time? Are any of the Youtube salvia-heads beating each other up?

  • OnPoint: Relationship Status: It's complicated,

Thanks from me too. I had been thinking about doing a guest post on this, but it all just made me want to gnaw my own tongue off.

It's not a pure nation of craziness though. Here's a great blogpost: 'My Motherland is not my Mother', from my Chinese friend in Beijing.

  • OnPoint: Dear Peter Brown: *Hug*,

Nice one, dude. I like it when you blog about your feelings.

Christ, ye olde 2004 march. I would have human-shielded Cale, hell, all of them once the violence started, on principle. But I have an uncanny ability to never be in the hotspot at the right time - unlike you Keith. If only Bharat Jamnadas hadn't been human-barricading me at the steps of Parliament, making me repeat the same quote over and over and signing those endless release forms for Asia Downunder... But ultimately, I didn't go down there because I didn't want to be part of the confrontation. And I should have known that if anyone could have stopped what eventually happened, it was me. I thought at the time, 'no-one could have stopped that'. In hindsight, I was wrong. It was on me. 'RedWatch' of the infamous 'commie hitlist' was kind of right about that in the end, funnily enough. I should have made contingency Asian-human-shield plans for when the anarchists went haywire. But I am a useless tactician. I'll know better for next time I organise an anti-hate crimes march in New Zealand, which will be, oh that's right - never.

  • Speaker: Insert Token Here,

You sure ain't the first 'girl who sounds like a dude' to have popped up here. I must have reviewed three books for Steve Braunias before I figured out that he thought I was a guy because of my 'muscular prose style'.

The things that... sometimes make me feel jarringly out of step with the flow of System are nothing to do with demographics. ...the times I wonder if I’m the only one here who’s ever sat in a gang house ... Who’s ever been taken captive by an ex-boyfriend, or walked out of home holding the policeman’s hand.

Class (I'm just guessing) and family/partner violence, aren't related to demographics? Not sure I get it.

But I don’t want to talk about it.

It's a shame that you're dangling the possibility of an actually different perspective in front of people, but don't feel up to providing it. Don't you know that's what real tokens do? Dance, girl, dance!
