  • Hard News: Reasons to be cheerful,

Bike riding. Auckland. The two don't really go together, do they.

I ride my bike. I've riden up Khyber Pass. Along Alber Stt. Along New North Road. Dominion Road. Beach Road. Up Symonds St and Queen Street. Along Ponsonby Rd.

I try to ride considerately, having regard to other traffic, but where I feel the need to assert my right to ride safely, I use the entire lane for the period of time I need. I haven't had anyone try to mow me down (knock on wood), and on the whole drivers have been generally good.

What I would like is for everyone to slow down when driving. Just take your sweet merry time. There's a recession on folks. No hurry at all to get to that meeting, to catch up with your friend, to pick up your kid from daycare. No hurry at al! Relax. Take your time. You'll feel better and your friendly local cyclist will thank you for it.

And you know what? When the US gets a gay president, it will be a Big Fucking Deal for me. Just for a couple of days, until it's time to start doing shit.

Meh, I'm waiting for the differently abled black lesbian with two cute kids of her own and married to a gorgeous Latina from Cuba to be elected POTUS.

  • Obamania, For Real,

Invocation by the Rev Rick Warren
That still rankles. I'm all for outreach and "inclusion", but they couldn't have found an evangelical preacher who isn't quite such a douchebag, and prone to lying about it?

I was watching TVOne's coverage, and lo! up pops Paul 'secret National Party mole' Henry. I could have sworn black and blue - nothing worse that having *him* do inanne commentary.

Then by some good stroke of luck, some kind soul mercifully spared us the sight of that douchebag pastor doing some smug prayer of sorts by having Paul Henry continue to ask questions. I guess Mr Henry does have his uses from time to time... but I'm more impressed by the kind soul in the programming studio that spared us all the sight of that vile man, Rick Warren.

  • Hard News: It's not OK to just make…,

Sorry - I've come late to this thread - I was up north, but

    What are Bill Ralston's qualifications?

Mr Ralston was for a while editor of that august tome, Metro magazine. He was noted for putting on successive front covers pictures of blonde bimbos (from Parnell?), and 'new lad' toys (motorbikes, fast cars). All very FHM. And the content - went downhill faster than a Big Mac down Supasize Me Morgan Spurlock's gullet at the height of his 'experiment', and with the exact same nutritional value as well.

Mid-life crises as editor of Metro magazine is not a terribly good look. Thank god he moved on.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

So, what sort of an idiot do you have to be to dress your three-year-old in his best and newest shirt and then let him eat dark red cherries?

ahhh, that fashion mused kicked in again - "hey that shirt is way too new, way too 'nice', way to conformist - let's irregularly stain the shirt!"

Which is my weird way of saying don't panic and stain the rest of the shirt in dark red cherries. Lemons and lemonade and all that.

See India Flint for observations on staining with natural dyes.

Put it another way: how do you define Hamas?

An organisation dedicated to my death, and the death of members of my family.

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

BTW anyone have any good recommendations for cafes around Taupo or Opotiki? Wheelchair accessible preferably.

Having just spent Xmas with the folks near Opotiki, there are two good cafes there.

One is upstairs above the florists in the Rostgard's building (and I'm not sure of the spelling of the building name but it is unusual), and the other cafe is the Two Fish Cafe in the side of the pub in the main street in the middle of 'town'. The upstairs is not wheelchair friendly, but I suspect that the Two Fish one is - you may have to go around the back or something.

  • Hard News: Conversation Starters,

Yep, I was going to suggest Mr Wilson but thought better of the idea, so your suggestion or Mr Tiso is an excellent one.
