  • Hard News: The smart thing to do,

Steady Angus...my response was simply to your inaccurate statement that the profits go to Holland. It was, and remains nonsense. There is a profit derived by all parties from the transaction.

    Simon,

The Dutch exploit low poduction costs in China for profit.

Who is responsible for the emissions? The Kyoto protocol types (european) say it should be the Chinese, the Chinese say it shouldn't. I am in agreement with the Chinese.

    In the merry dance of globalisation and profits that flow here, there and hither, my take on the whole emissions thing is this;

We, being all of us who buy Chinese made products, export our emissions and pollution to China. It's the West's greatest export industry. In return for exporting our pollution and emissions to the grateful Chinese*, we get cheap products.

Only problem is that the Yellow River is no longer Yellow. While that's a Chinese problem, it's also our problem. Just check the label on the shirt you are wearing. Made in China? You've exported your share of pollution and emissions from the making of that shirt to China.

*which poses another question: is irony dead, on the web or in general?

and Native Affairs host Julian Wilcox is an under-rated master IMNSHO), or the kind of substantive panel discussion that is routine on Marae,

I agree with Mr Ranapia here. Julian Wilcox is under-rated. I used to watch him regularly til someone fiddled with the settings on my telly and the sometimes technologically challenged me can't figure out how to tune it back to Maori TV.

Chris Trotter slapping down those uppity niggers one more time (which seems to have disappeared from Stuff) is anything but.

I read that article. It was astonishing, and not in the way that Mr Ranapia is trying to spin it, and unlike anything I've seen before. Try the DomPost as the original article appeared there.

It's [the coalition agreements] quick ,so it can't be scrutinised. I see how Key got the name "The Smiling Assassin"

What's that phrase? Act in haste, repent at leisure.

This will be interesting to watch.

  • Hard News: Rethinking the EFA,

Someone told me APN were going to sell The Listener. Let's get a consortium together to buy it. I miss The Listener. Not the rag that goes by it's name but the one I used to subscribe to.

Put my name down! I miss it as well!

  • Hard News: Prospects,

It's not too late to hobble the Nats through strategic voting in Epsom. Could someone from there confirm that such a scenario might uphold? It would certainly hobble the Nats if they did...

I live in Epsom and the scenario certainly holds.

If I want a National Govt but no Act party I vote for Kate Sutton.

If I want a National Govt with Act I vote for the guy in the canary yellow jacket.

If I want a Labour Govt I vote for Richard Worth.

Easy peasy. And not so hard to get one's head around. Voting for Kate Sutton means that the right vote goes to Richard and Rodney, and they can battle it out. Voting for Richard as electorate MP splits the 'right' vote and Kate comes up the middle.

So strategically, for Labour voters in Epsom, you vote for Richard Worth if you want a Labour Govt.

That's my take on it and I could be wrong, but I suspect I'm not too far off the mark.

  • Island Life: Still not over it,

Well, I'm one of those dreaded poli's that someone voted for... I also ride a bike - when it's not raining, when it's warm, and when daylight saving kicks in.

IMHO cycling is not well served at all in Auckland in terms of infrastructre, and I've done my small wee part to change that by asking Council to investigate bike stands in local shopping centres like Kingsland, Mt Albert, Eden Valley, Upper Symonds St, etc.

It's likely that stands will be put in - although I note that there is already a stand in Kingsland - thoughtfully hidden from sight underneath the stairs to the rail station overpass. I don't expect myself or other drivers to park cars in dark hidden places so I'm not about to park my bike in hidden dark places anytime soon.

Bike lanes I fully support as they make cycling more *visible* and hence affect driver behaviour.

My behaviour on the road is to wave my arms *alot* and to take up all the space I deem necessary to ride safely, and that means I'll use an entire lane for short periods. Interestingly enough when I first started riding last year I was astonished at the number of drivers that carefully went around me giving me a good amount of room. (This in contrast to the very few and far between who see fit to drive, for whatever reason, very close to me on my bike.) Either I have an invisible sign above my head saying 'keep clear" or Auckland drivers are kind hearted. I prefer the latter theory.

However, from time to time, cycling issues do crop up on the Community Board agenda. It would be good if we could see a number of cyclists attend the meeting when these issues are discussed, and ask to speak in public forum. A room of cyclists, of whatever stripe, is a very powerful presence indeed.
