  • Up Front: The Classics Are Rubbish Too,

At the risk of exposing poor taste: I read _The Redemption of Athalus_ by David Eddings. Summary: In a series of battles (over 800 pages or so) of Good vs Evil, Good wins every time without much effort while having smug "amusing" conversations with each other. First clear proof to me that you need Bad Stuff for a novel to be interesting.

    Also: Book-a-minute: the classics, ultra-condensed.

And: The Eye of Argon: Worst fantasy short story ever. Conventions hold reading competitions: you have to see how far you can get before you start laughing..

  • Hard News: The Debate and Onwards,

Did you see the footage of McCain standing up David Letterman? He was meant to be a guest on Letterman, but he called and cancelled at the last minute, saying he had to fly to Washington to save the economy. In fact, he was actually just three blocks away doing a different interview on CBS news. Letterman found out about this while he was taping his show..

  • Hard News: The TVNZ 7 Internet Debate,

Yeah, definitely something on peering. Although I'm not sure what the current state of that argument is. It seems that the free market system we've got acts contrary to the goal of getting the best possible internet service here. It'd be nice to see some pressure from the government for "internet efficiency" -- a principle that intra-NZ traffic should not leave the country unless the internal routes are so saturated it's the clearly the better option.

You could also ask some questions about National's fibre policy (though I'm not sure if you can get answers): can they do it for the budget they propose? who will own the resulting fibre (government or telecom)?

  • Cracker: Is there a Sub in the City?,

I've been shouted at a couple of times from cars while riding my bike. You get maybe two dopplering syllables as the car whizzes past, completely incomprehensible. Unless the truckie pulled over, or slower to walking pace, I can't believe he'd have time to blow his horn _and_ shout such a long sentence _and_ be comprehensible..

  • Hard News: The Suicide Note,

I had no trouble playing DivX/XviD on my Mac. I just went here and followed the instructions. Works with Front Row no problem. I'm not sure if it would work with the AppleTV, though.
