    the patriarchy hurts everyone.

It does, and it really is time people stopped buying into it.
And yet we still celebrate the birth of a man/god annually who supposedly died for something(I'm not quite sure what). It kind of ensures the patriarchy continues.
But I still like giving gifts...

make believe world of gun free zones and leaving people defenseless when there are crazies

I love it when people say we're living in make believe worlds. We live in societies of our creation. They are not immutable!

Creating a culture of awareness but not sensationalism is going to be hard – it goes against the grain. But it has a better chance than gun laws in reducing mass shootings

Change gun laws first seems the best idea. Then deal with the underlying social issues, which is going to present greater difficulties and will take a lot longer. Maybe generations, who knows.. The US has a long way to go there methinks.

But any time that a person sets out to kill dozens of young children and they were identified and being treated, we have to define that as a failure of the mental health system, even if fixing that failure might be really hard. Safety of the patient and safety of others in their family and community has got to be a top priority of that system.

These are people your talking about. And when labels like

    Oppositional Defiant Disorder

    are put on people.
    Your going to get nowhere.
A sympathetic, well-resourced health service, with no fear of retribution or recrimination might be a good starting point. Maybe a no expense to citizens outservice, concentrating on building relationships and trust with people and communities might (cause I dont know) work. To fund it would need a govt that that wasnt so obsessed with hobnobbing with business and sports wallies.
    Like that'll happen.

    The Lange Goodbye…

Well, he was wrong in one crucial aspect. People will be led, where they will.
Thinking that en masse we would follow a nebulous ideal (The Golden Rule) instead of those exerting the current influence.
Yep easily Led Or Not, Choice oh Shit.

    “I couldn’t in all consciousness,

    Well bugger me!
    SHE DID SAY THAT!
The mind, mouth connection points to a mess, or is there just a word salad inhabiting these people's brains.
Poor luvs (not really) answering all these questions, having to appear wise? Is it?
Well as amusing as it is, they are our leaders and appear to be a laughing stock.
Conformity never does sit well when assumed like a cloak. And of course all that matters is the want to be wealthy, oh yes, and happy just like everyone else.
    Its what you do.
When your at the head of the queue.
    Right?
I'll just mutter 'Fuckers' and go to work.

Creating inclusive communities with informed and engaged members would quell the need for more police and ease stretched health services.

Yep. But they also cant stand up to those rather well off, loud voices crying “WOLF” or the Chicken Little’s. I cant decide which one Greg O’Connor is tho’
A chicken in wolf's clothing perhaps?

because I was thinking, poor, depressed about that, drink to feel better, drown your sorrows, leads to more depression, leads to more drinking for those few moments of euphoria/ confidence (get in the car ,go for a spin, cops ,oh no ,had a few and will be pinged for no rego ,do a runner , bang! and then 1 more, leads to angry about your lot, leads to acting/ lashing out. Or hurt your family physically. Black outs follow. Wake up in the morning start again. One big circle.

It keeps many other circles going. Personal unhappiness, how to deal with it or profit from it. The latter seems to have the upper hand at present. And we've been at this for a while now, this living thing, and now sheer numbers gets in the way. Its too much for dullards like Key, Brownlee, Dunne, and even Shearer to come to grips with. But hey, they are just politicians, not really interested in consciousness. Just giving the appearance of caring for constituents.
