  • Hard News: Safari 4 beta: seriously quick,

What is it that people are doing with their javascripts that need so much speed? Whatever became of the idea of thin clients?

Jackie, I remember that there was a place called the Pink Pussycat on K-Road, which was a brothel. You'd have to be game to walk in the door, let alone hop in the spa pool. It's not only gone, it's actually been knocked down, now.

Les Mills has a men's only spa pool? wtf? Now I know why I chose Club Physical.

From the way an ex-gf told it, the place that really needs to watch the inappropriate behavior is the girl's change room, in which total bitchiness about appearance sounds like the norm. My experience of men's is that you don't talk to anyone unless you know them.

  • Hard News: Get yer avatars out,

All computers can be hacked remotely whether they are connected to a network or not. Once hacked, the hacker has total control, including locking out anyone actually using the machine.

As I understand it, spoofing TCP/IP conversations is only possible on the Hollywood OS

Juha, IP spoofing is not that trivial. Not for any conversation longer than one IP packet, as a download almost certainly will be. It can cause trouble, but I imagine the trouble would mostly be on the spoofer, not the spoofed.

  • Hard News: Get yer avatars out,

There's still an IP trail to devices behind NAT devices. But the IPs on the other side are not public. So it's down to the cooperation of the owner of the device to find the actual machine. If they have dynamic IPs and no logging of what IPs were shared or who logged in when, then it's very problematic indeed.

That doesn't mean that the ISP couldn't insist that such logging be turned on, otherwise they will terminate the whole connection. Then they can insist on some kind of proof that the user has been sufficiently punished to get them not to terminate.

But seriously, for copyright violation, would they bother? It's not even their copyright. I seriously think that if this bill had passed into law in the proposed format, the biggest obstacle to anything actually changing would be the ISPs themselves. They would have responded to every single accusation of copyright violation with a mountain of stonewalling red tape to the accuser. It would be in their interests to make it as expensive and difficult as possible for anyone to be able to insist that they lose customers, who would simply leap to the next ISP in a moment.

But the fact that practically it would not have worked doesn't mean it was an OK proposal, or that it isn't a big win that it's canned. It's just a fairly typical incarnation of the fact that the law lags behind technology so badly that it's ridiculous.

Prison isn't meant to be a picnic. That goes towards deterrence and retribution. To that extent I'd probably be opposed to prisoners getting 6 course meals from famous chefs, regular rounds of golf, fishing trips, day trips to Rainbow's End, access to the finest whores, shopping sprees, pedicures, fine wines, chocolates, coffee and caviar, rock concerts, etc, all on a daily basis and at the taxpayer's expense. But you can take punishment too far, to the point where it compromises rehabilitation completely.

I am middle class, and it doesn't matter shit to this. It's totally irrelevant. I could be wealthy, and come from Timbuctoo and still know that being in a NZ prison is totally shit.

David, if being in prison is nice, how come people aren't lining up for it?

You may be confusing tough talk with desire. Just because they have to make light of the burden of being inside doesn't mean it is something they would choose.

I can understand that some people can't cope with life outside of prison, particularly if they have been inside for a long time. That's quite a different matter.
