  • Legal Beagle: Questions, but no answers,…, in reply to Tony Meyer,

Are the National Party doing this because they believe that either they or the public have a right to a better quality of information about what the Government is doing, I don't believe so. Do they think they will get better quality of information by doing so, again I don't believe so. Its quite clear they are simply being obstructive.

I'm fairly passionate about politics in general and I do believe that better quality (not necessarily quantity) of information about the workings of government would be a good thing. On the other hand I know of many people who are generally turned off by politics and politicians in general who explain their position by saying they are all as bad as each other and a waste of space in general. Today I find it hard to argue against that position.

  • Legal Beagle: Questions, but no answers,…,

Whether or not they have a right to information and whether or not the information should or shouldn't be public in the first place, this is extremely petty behaviour from the National party. Makes them look like sore losers with nothing better to do than play games. In particular given that in the last 9 years they have been extremely cavalier in their responses to OIA requests.

  • Polity: English canards,

Stop this right now. Accuracy has no place in politics in this day and age. Your reasoning contradicts uncle bills truthiness and at the end if the day I don't think the public really cares whether the minister of finance is good with numbers.

  • Up Front: Cui bono?, in reply to Sacha,

Indeed. De stigmatsing social welfare is one the most persuasive reasons to support a ubi.

  • Hard News: Radio Punks: So many stories,

I started listening to b in the late 80s because you stood a decent chance if winning smarties on the Saturday morning kids show. I'm 35 now and I don't listen to the kids show anymore but it's still the only station I listen to (honorable exception being live cricket on radio sport). Other stations really are shit. Fuck knuckles cock and piss. Balls.

  • Envirologue: Choose Wisely, Grasshopper:…, in reply to william blake,

Its not too early to discuss this. I for one have been a green party supporter my whole voting life (lapsed as a member) because never because of their environmental credentials. There is a significant portion of their membership and their voting base for whom social justice is far more important than environmental policies. I hope shaw does increase the vote by taking support from the nats but there is avery real risk that some of the core support will drift away into splinter groups (mana...?) That fail to break the threshold to win seats in Parliament.

Interesting post. The uk economy has been consistently under performing for the last 5 years. Stable yes bur crap even more so. Is that really something to cheer about?

  • Hard News: About Campbell Live,

Mediaworks would be very short sighted to cancel Campbell Live. While it may be expensive to run and not entirely profitable, it is bad business to make decisions in isolation from the wider context. Does anyone think McDonalds makes profits selling salads and wraps? I very much doubt they do but they are aware that in order to maintain their market share in profitable junk they have to offer a broad range of options in order to remain relevant to as many potential customers as possible.

Personally I watch TVNZ news at 6 but I reach for the remote as soon as the weather report is winding down, often to watch Campbell live (unless there has been much sport on in which case the Crowd Goes Wild gets a run).

  • Hard News: The Sky is the limit, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Try Snap. By far the best telco ive come across (and ive tried most). You may spend a few extra dollars but its absolutely worth it. Their customer service is superb and they are even based in Christchurch so you'll be supporting a local business.
