I'm thinking the world should refrain from telling drummer jokes today.
Ah yes. Tool.
What the hell is that bollocks about?
I'm buggered if I can understand why Tool are so well loved by NZers. I put them in the same bucket as Muse, Foo Fighters, and Ben Harper.
Nickleback, Creed, et al are bad but I don't think they fall into the category of torture, cos at least you can have some fun with their tunes:
Sunn O))), on the other hand. How do you have fun with them? Surely this is the perfect noise to encourage the hungry, sleep-deprived prisoner to confess?
Weezer: I love the Blue album. Pinkerton is *perfect*. The Green Album and Maladroit have their place. There's one song on Make Believe that's really good. The Red Album has three fantastic tracks.
Then they did this:
How am I supposed to tell my kids their music sucks when my bands are making shit like that?
I'm looking forward to a quiet hour or so to enjoy that @peace album. In the meantime, my pick for one of the best records to come out of NZ is "Little Death" by Steve Abel. Here's a vid of him singing a wonderful duet with Kirsten Morrell.
Those cats have broken me out of a downer mood. Moar plz ser!
I don't think you can generally compare "Hug An X" with Hug A Y".
Sometimes it's just an offensive term. Sometimes it's fun. Sometimes it entirely depends on who you're hugging.
Consider the list below. For each one there's someone somewhere (and probably more for some items than others) who's going to be really offended.
Hug a ginga
Hug a geek
Hug a beanpole
Hug a hottie
Hug a fatty
Hug a honky
Hug a poofter
Hug a girl
Hug a mother
Hug a lesbian
Hug a barista
Hug a sysadmin
Hug a paedophile
Hug a postie
Hug a tree
Hug a granny
Hug a copper
Can't we just agree that you probably shouldn't be running up to strangers and hugging them when they don't expect it?
I think the suggested code of conduct is a bit precious.
Only a bit? It has frickin' badges!
Hasn't "Don't be a dick and don't feed the trolls" been around since the glory days of usenet? What more do you need?
I second Juha's proposal and would like to nominate myself to the board as well. I believe I am eminently qualified: my slashdot userid is 1882 so I've been trolling, sorry, posting with civility since the 90s.
"You Own Your Own Words" originated on The Well which didn't (still doesn't?) have anonymous accounts.
All the accounts on The Well were paid accounts, it was fairly easy to track down who was actually saying what. On yr average WordPress blog it's very very hard if not impossible to prevent people posting anonymously.
In the context of O'Reilly's Code of Conduct unless you're prepared to vet every post before it appears publically I don't see how you can possibly take responsibility for what appears.
