  • Hard News: The Hager saga continues, in reply to Tom Semmens,

Trevitt is awful. Wincingly bad attempts at humour and a rabid Nat party rah-rah girl who has been been frothing at the mouth at the Labour party situation.
Just the girl for Slater, obviously.

And now the Herald have taken Glucina’s tawdry column and elevated it to a plumb spot inside the paper . It sits up there like a piece of journalism gobbling up precious column inches that could be used for actual stories.

Yep, Full Tabloid …Kirk Lazarus comes to mind.

  • Hard News: Doing over the witness, in reply to Bart Janssen,

Given the nature of the investigation it would appear that someone in the police or above has the additional intent of warning off any other investigative journalists from digging into anything that might potentially embarrass this government

I think the overt message here is to any other whistleblowers who might have been thinking about dumping information to Hager on say, high-flying corporate tax cheats or covert surveillance on large media organisations…... or Speargun…..

  • Hard News: Doing over the witness,

Let’s look at two somewhat similar cases under the current government:

    1. The SFO seeking to seize Matt Nippert’s notes on the South Canterbury Finance story. Even thought it was not constrained by the Evidence Act, the SFO didn’t come in, clear his desk and seize his devices. It negotiated with NBR and eventually reached an agreement that would protect Nippert’s sources.

    2. The police serving search warrants on major media organisations during the 2011 election campaign, consequent to Key’s “teapot tapes” complaint. Again, the police didn’t just walk in and clean out the newsrooms. RNZ, TVNZ and the HoS were able to contest the warrants. They didn’t just have all kinds of stuff seized and get told to go to court to get it back.

Neither of these cases involved Five Eyes. That may be why this 'police' action has progressed differently?

  • Hard News: Doing over the witness, in reply to Dylan Reeve,

If they were going to break in they’d have to get clearance. The police investigation is a very convenient cover. And of course, they want you to know they can enter your house and record all aspects of the way you live and your personal circumstances at their leisure (10 hours worth). Explicit intimidation.

Once equipment has been seized it can then be appraised for tracking or snoop implants. From the report they seem to have confiscated a wide range of Hagers gear.

They're being called 'police' but the SIS will be closely involved with this, dredging Hagers data for correspondence around Snowden and Speargun

  • Speaker: Why we should not dismiss…, in reply to william blake,

What are the odds that there'll be an SIS operative under cover with those police digging around for any Snowden or Greenwald correspondence on Hagers computers? And no, I'm not a conspiracy theorist.

  • Speaker: An Open Letter To David Cunliffe, in reply to Hilary Stace,

I’ve been through this shit since the late 70s. My first labour vote was in the UK 1979 election which Thatcher won. The 80s were profoundly depressing, Callaghan. Foot, the Bennites, Kinnock, Militant (especially in my home town Liverpool). Came to NZ in the late 80s just as your Labour party was getting it all arse about tit. Seeing Blair smarm his way through the 90s was at least geographically removed but just as depressing. Clark years were like the sun coming out.
I know politics is a continuum of compromise and conflict and the wave form rises and falls but I just find myself wearying of all the bullshit, especially when there is a National party dismantling the country in broad daylight, unopposed.
This election we were delivering Labour flyers in Epsom for fucks sake, the very definition of pissing in the wind, and you just sort of get to the ‘whats-the-friggin’point’ of it all.
    Sigh.

Erm, might be an idea to flag as NSFW…..yeah, I know it's the Onion but the top bar is pretty explicit.
