  • Hard News: Evil,

    Well put Craig,

I actually think Broad should give Louise Nichols some form of public award or recognition, she has gone through a hell I doubt many could survive & I think it would go someway towards removing the link Craig talks about for Police to recognise publicly what she's gone through.

  • Hard News: New Dataz,

I love the idea of direct YouTube, bestofyoutube is already my most watched video blog on the appletv.
BUT, the appletv chews a 20GB bandwidth allocation with consumate ease, 40GB would be closer to the minimum you need :) ( I download the HD movie trailers to & convert with QT Pro so they work on the appletv ).
I was actually really surprised when I got the appletv how much I use it for watching video blogs, it was certainly not one of my motivations for getting it.

  • Hard News: Compromise,

Craig, he kind of backtracked on the PCA comment, or tried to play it down would be more accurate, ie. the courts will be key in creating case law, but the impression I got was he was very comfortable that the guidelines were acceptably clear from the start.
I actually prefer the discretion, with the law defining intent, as opposed to being to specific and rule based, it makes it alot harder to wriggle out on a technicality and put's emphasis on human judgement on both sides, sure it might get it wrong occassionally, but longer term it's a more manageable system.

  • Hard News: Compromise,

John Campbell had a good interview with the Police Commissioner last night, basically he re-iterated what Russell said, which was the original Bill provided latitude for judgment calls, but the new bill provides more clarification.
He also mentioned that they will be guided by Court decisions and potentially the Police Complaints Authority decisions regarding the definition of acceptable force, but that any use of instruments for punishment is no longer acceptable, nor indeed any contact with the head in punishment, all reasonable stuff.
Regarding the John Key/Helen Clark aspect I think it was a draw, both showed commendable willingness to compromise and work together in the better interest of the country as a whole, there should and will be points of differentiation, but there are also areas of common good & for the political leaders of the two main parties to recognise that enhances I think the reputation of the political process ( which has taken a beating over recent years ).

  • Hard News: You've gotta hand it to Steve,

I actually did quite alot of work with NIWA & Metservice in the last half of the 1990s, Augie is so far off base here it is not funny.
The core issue is that MetService do not concentrate on quality New Zealand forcasting, in order to make money as a SOE they have expanded globally, which in a small organisation inevitiably leads to dissipation of skills.
I would prefer if NIWA had their role expanded to taking over MetServices core weather forecasting role, more like the Bureau of Meterology in Australia, with Metra being one of multiple providers of that data in commercial formats.
Personally I found NIWA fantastic to work with their focus on weather and accurate visualisation of that weather, MetService is very much an organisation with a split personality.

  • Hard News: The Big Roundup,

The East stand did sound better, unfortunately we didn't get there until the Killers, who were my pick of the bands I heard, though I had two teenage daughters & we headed off about 8:30, it was a shame about the west stand audio & vodafone sms packing it in, the timing of that was kinda bad as my 15yr old ( 5 foot 6 & not alot of her ) & 2 friends had been up the front for Goodnight Nurse & stayed for MCR, I could see from the west stand it was gong to be rough, but could not warn them & it got pretty bad, the surge at the start was scarey viewing ( as a Dad ). Thankfully the girls got out ok.
Speaking of BYO liquor it was everywhere, well at least I'm figuring the abundance of camelbak's & varients were not filled with water :).
I do agree about not needing a VIP lounge, the stand at the end ( if you were all 18 ) looked a great spot & the East stand was v.good, not to mention the back stages after MCR were fantastic, nice music & not to many people.

  • Hard News: The Suicide Note,

Mines ordered, though the cables are incorrectly setup at the moment ( the part id's are wrong ) on apple.co.nz, so I've just got the box.

I got it for a few reasons.

    - Music, it's an awefully elegant & easy way to play music on my stereo, especially for my daughters from their iPods/laptops
    - Movie Trailers, ok I have a HD screen & have not seen anything on it it in HD :)
    - Photo's, having something easy which works well for displaying photo's would be handy.
    - TV programmes ( maybe )

Not alot of video in there & not alot of usage, but I'm betting on convenience ( being a mac ) & also being able to buy tv programmes & hopefully HD content later.

The real key missing element was a PVR, but that really requires integration to the EPG ( programme guide ) and I suspect wisely apple left that can of worms alone.

    Nigel
