  • Island Life: All stadium, all the time,

Ok building a new unneeded stadium just so it'll be iconic sounds great , but does that mean if it turns out not to be iconic we'll build yet another one ?

Peter , don't worry ,we're convinced buiding a stadium downtown will help our traffic worries.

"it is estimated that the tour generated more than NZ$130 million in additional foreign exchange earnings.
A separate estimate from the Tourism Research Council estimates the direct spending by visitors associated with the Lions tour at NZ$96 million" ( source: Visa International)

these figures are for revenue , not profit. There are a few other costs to be accounted for before we allocate the lot to stadium building. (and dont forget to convert them to 2011 dollars)

I think the length of stay depends on other factors as well the length of tournament , so may not be twice as long.

    Tom
I'd also pay to have some of those events only happen in wellington , but most of the good ones them are happening in auckland already.
and we're getting Roger Waters , so there! :)

"Like Auckland, Dunedin needed a new stadium come World Cup time"
Actually we don't ,thats part of the "problem" , we're spoilt for choice . And we're mostly having perfectly civil discussions about it.
(tho I wouldn't mind if more of them were a bit heated)

"we promised the irb a 60,000 seater as part of the deal"

but a $50 million upgrade of Eden park was supposed to cater for that. Not sure if thats still considered practical tho.

Bart , we've already got the hosting rights , we dont need to 'build it and they will come ', they're already coming.

that was my point , I don't see why we should ignore the anti-lobby just because they're emotional .

And I think I'd be on strong ground in saying that the hysteria has overwhelmingly come from the anti-stadium lobby - so much of the language has been plain daft. The anti-stadium rhetoric generated in that meeting yesterday just defied reason. Cancerous? Used condom?

so someone rolled out the cancerous word again , they meant it will be ugly. Hardly seems worthy of the hysterical response to it.
But its a good point that there is a lot of emotion being shown against the stadium ,as opposed to the wtf lets just build it attitude.

No Don , Chris does not have x-ray specs , I can see North Head as well, but as Chris said " The view would be improved by removing the other obstructions ".
But I'm not sure what RB 's on about when he says the area concerned "offers no public view whatsoever of the harbour".
