Hard News: Sunday blues, and we're on Sky
I don't usually get the Sunday News, but I picked it up at the weekend on my way back from the markets. And it struck me that the paper is travelling better than its Sunday rivals. It sticks to its knitting as a tabloid, it's visually punchy -- and, increasingly, it seems to get stories.

This week's Media7 will be the first to go out on the Sky platform, as well as Freeview -- meaning our potential audience gets a lot larger.

TVNZ 7 will be on Channel 97 on Sky, up there with the news and documentary channels. Media7 will screen at 9.10pm on Thursday, and several times thereafter.

What does freeview provide that sky doesn't these days?
I remember there was a time when the one-off cost of freeview, plus the fact that it had some channels that sky didn't, made it more worth looking at. Is the second half of that gone now?

Speaking of broadband I've been trying to figure out where to jump next - the problem here in Dunedin is that we've been cabinetised ... all the dslams are in the neighbourhoods now (or at least are in mine) - that means that my ISP Orcon wont ever get around to installing their equipment in my local telephone exchange - no 25mbps for me
Locally at least it appears that Telecom has snookered all the other ISPs - sure they've split into bits but given the commerce commission's recent ruling no one can compete with them now that they've forced us into cabinets.
Orcon's been quite rightly crying 'foul' - but, they've also shown little enthusiasm to move faster broadband out of their cherry-picked markets in central Auckland and Wellington - unless something changes soon I may be faced with holding my nose and, despite my past bad experiences, moving to Telecom
I tried to get any sort of indication out of Orcon on the phone and by email this week - didn't really get an answer that helped much - I want some competition here - I throw $1500 a year in this direction who wants to make the best offer?

Kyle, it's worse than that. It seems TVNZ caved and allowed Sky to have the Freeview channels without insisting on quid pro qui for Prime, which is still not available on Freeview. Missed opportunity there - although nice for Russ with the bigger potential audience and all.

I agree about the Sunday News, and it does seem to be Jonathan Marshall who is leading it in this direction. He's a very good tabloid reporter - I often find I'm half-appalled, half-admiring of what he does.
I wonder if he'll be able to turn into a really good non-tabloid reporter? He certainly has the drive.

Heh, just what I was about to say, Graeme. Even if you compare it with only the most basic Sky package, you'd be saving 500 bucks a year. And also a digital terrestrial platform. Which doesn't suffer from rain fade like a satellite-based system.
Also, Jeremy, who on earth will sign up for Sky just to get prime in digital? Its more of a benefit for TVNZ to be on the Sky platform than it is for Sky to be on Freeview - I'd imagine the vastly increased audience for TVNZ 6 and 7 would allow higher priced advertising rates to be levied (is there advertising on 6 and 7? I don't know as I have neither sky nor freeview)?

I think that by the time the year's out, Prime will be on Freeview. Jonathan Coleman is leaning on Sky, I gather.

I'd be surprised, none of the new channel that have come on stream in the last eighteen months or so (documentary, comedy, etc.) were put on the cable system, I think it's to encourage the shift to digital. TVNZ 7 migth just about do it for us.

Sure, but even then a couple of mildly intriguing docos a month does not a convincing cost-benefit analysis make. My entirely unscientific survey would suggest that Gio isn't only person for whom 'sport on tap' is Sky's major, if not only, attraction.
Anyway, am I the only person who finds themselves watch a lot less TV full stop -- and thanks to a PVR being a lot more selective about what I do watch and saving it up for a wet weekend.

In my house the most watched TV channel is Playhouse Disney. The kids love it.

I'd be surprised, none of the new channel that have come on stream in the last eighteen months or so (documentary, comedy, etc.) were put on the cable system, I think it's to encourage the shift to digital. TVNZ 7 migth just about do it for us.
comedy and doc are on telstra clear cable
but you have to sign up for more than the basic package
I will be mighty pissed if TVNZ6 & 7 are not on the TC box becuase sky provides all their programming

Not true: documentary and comedy aren't part of TelstraClear's basic package, but if you go for one that gets you movies or sport then you get those channels too.
I don't subscribe myself, but was at a mate's place on the weekend and watched the rugby followed by comedy - he has cable, not Sky.
