Up Front: Go For Launch
A few weeks ago I took a trip home to visit my mother. I went along to rehearsal with her and saw my old English teacher, a man I love partially because he taught me the difference between ‘immoral’ and ‘amoral’ and opened up the Third Way for me.
Maybe no one died, but if they had been in earshot, they might have turned a startling red colour...
Jo and I have been in the same room before and no-one died, so that's bound to happen again.
I think a more likely explanation is that the lack of casualties was a freak occurrence.
Can I RSVP for Wellington, like, now?
Oh crap... the 27th... that's tragic. I can't. Justine is leaving for Auckland at midday.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

meaning? Or is this one of those things we don't want to know the answer to.
Just a word on the Wellington RSVP: to keep it seemly, I'll have to write some words in the correct form to the effect that Wellington Central MP Grant Robertson, our host, invites you ...
But just diary it in for now anyway.

Babysitter?

But Jo, you, and I have not been. That's a crapload of cleavage for one evening.

Heh, actually there was a guy just over your left shoulder who was trying VERY hard not to listen, but couldn't quite manage. He kept leaning backwards, catching himself and sitting forward again. The backs of his ears were a very interesting shade of fuschia.

As I am a paragon of clean living and virtue, I will blame this on your KAOS stories, not anything I may have said.

Oooh, I will have to find something fabulous to wear and notify the twins that they will be on display.
Babysitter?
We're not quite there with Lucia yet. She'll find it difficult enough without her Mum for three days.
Not that I want to make this thread about me, but I'm quietly gutted.

The noise I made on reading that cannot be spelt.

Pants. Not that it's just about me, of course, but I'll be in the Wellington area until I fly out on the 2nd.

Then we’ll be taking the Book Tour up-country and hitting Auckland. We’ll book-launch at the Velvet Room on Sale St on the 2nd of December, looking at a 6:30 start.
Oh dear... you realise us North Shore nosferatu can't cross flowing water? But because it's you, I'll blow out my sacrificial goat budget for the quarter and make an effort...

A Christchurch event huzzah! I know I don't post here much, but I read every bleedin' thing, so meeting some people would be great.

Damn: and here's me all this time assuring people that you don't blow goats ...

Behave, or I will tell tell the group what decadent and depraved North Shore establishments you frequent on the weekend. That is all. :)

Could you bring her? I think Bob the toddler will be there to keep her company.

Lovely - I demand that you come and see us. Bring signed copies as a password.

Ah, not that I'm dissing Bob here, but Lucia is lovely but also a bit of a challenge around new company.
How solid do we need to RSVP? Keen but unlikely to know until fairly shortly before whether I'll be able to attend (nebulous commitments e.g. children, work, bicycle, etc).
I remember the Thistle Inn back in the 80s, when it scared the stuffing out of me as a kid. Big scruffy dodgy wharfie hangout. Mind you, those were the days when the Thorndon Tavern was still open - it was a different world then. Much less intimidating since I left primary school.

The Appliance Shed Outlet Store is my church.

Well they do serve their chips with gravy, but now I think you'll find the most scary people in it are public servants.

Ladies (and ballboys) I was promised debauchery, and debauchery I will have.

Well indeed. The only time I've actually drunk in it, I was a public servant, and it was a "strategy meeting" at 4pm on a Friday.

OMFG... I make David hang around while I change my library books, so the payback is considerable: Appliance Shed, Mitre 10 Mega, the beat rolls on... It's the male version of retail Platonic idealism. You don't even come away with a torturous but flattering pair of shoes at the end of it.

Surely the Henderson Appliance Shed is closer to Point Chev? I feel snubbed.

I did come away with a food processor last-but-one time.

The Wairau one has the advantage of being next door to PB Technologies, which offers its own man-shopping delights (by which I mean, shopping by men, not, er for them ...). There is real vindication in knowing you have purchased the very cheapest 4GB flash drive in town.
It's also close to the other big-box retailers. I bought a $1500 set of German-made home theatre speakers for $500 from Harvey Norman (which has its own outlet department instore!) at Labour Weekend. Absolute steal. It later dawned on me that this wasn't going to be so good until I also bought a newer receiver and sub-woofer for many more dollars. Oops. At least I don't gamble.
when I lived in Thorndon, and was running, the Thistle was on my route. This is when it was still a fairly rough pub.
Came past one post-deadline run on a Thursday arvo, two old blokes leaning on the rail on the footpath outside, smoking like chimneys and surrounded by empties.
'Slow down, you'll kill yourself,' one of them says to me.
'We've all got to die of something,' was my shot back.
It was a nicely inverted exchange, I felt.
Dr Hayward has already appraised me, via email, of the Parliamentary launch and it is in my diary.
I shall be there, probably the only one in double breasted pinstripes, with my Presbyterian reserve and my silent thoughts of 'I think that goes a bit far.'
Will skip the subesequent festivities, I suspect. Past my bedtime.

8pm? What is it with journalists these days?

Awesome. I was raised Presbyterian. I think I'm still allowed on the Reserve.
I’ll be in Auckland for some days after this for further shenanigans, but that’s a secret until it isn’t.
I think I just let that out on Twitter.
Friday December 4: Orcon Great Blend Christmas Party, with another Nat Torkington-curated Ignite session and all kinds of awesomeness throughout the evening.
(I'll keep the entertainment lineup secret for the moment, but I think you'll be impressed.)
Mark that bad boy in your calendar too.
Nor are we ignoring you like we are Hamilton and Dunedin and all those other towns.
On behalf of the ignored, "city" please!
So, it looks like another trip up SH1!!

Reminds me of this.
