  • Tom Semmens,

Hmmm, I am not going to comment anymore on this - Much like the Olympic threads, I have said my piece.

Frankly I think to expend anymore effort on it is to make us all look comically provincial and make Steve Crow and rest his meat market crew bigger than they are... Let him have his parade, blink and you'll miss it.

  • Tristan,

The thing I find most offensive about the whole mess is the way that everyone is talking about breasts...

The way that the actual living breathing people whose nudity is at question here are being sidelined so completely - by Crow, by the media, by damn near everyone - says everything about this I really need to know.

You know Lucy your right, why hasn't anyone asked any of the people on the back of the bikes for thier take...

Just please don't goto Miss Lewis ive seen and heard enough from her already

The chicks had to make all the cups of tea as well as supply the blow jobs.

Wow, that takes multi tasking to a whole new level.

  • Rich of Observationz,

Tolerance has to be for stuff we don't like (obnoxious fat pornographers who might even be closet Libertarians) as well as stuff that we like.

I see that the police are trying to supress the Undy 500 rally - despite the fact that, if the driver remains sober and the road rules are complied with, students are perfectly entitled to drive from Christchurch to Dunedin and have a party.

It's all about context, anyway. http://www.criticaltits.com/ will be on for the 13th time at Burning Man next week. Hopefully the dust storms will stay away.

  • Hamboy,

I don't really care for the parade itself...just don't see the appeal.

    The real entertainment was the

    ...horny, leering crowd...

Of which there wasn't that many, the crowd was pretty much the crowd one normally saw in the square at lunchtime, just more of them.

Once you have seen one topless stripper you have seen them all, but the enthusiasm of some of the younger lads in the office was funny.

Pish posh. I bet any of us with experience in either could do both at the same time!

(There's an appallingly crass 'teabagging' joke to be made here, I just know it...)

  • Che Tibby,

who was the geezer from family first (or something) who was crapping on about 'protecting children' from this palaver?

yup. "protecting children"... from boobs. might have to get some new amendments to the legislation regarding safety equipment for breastfeeding babies.

or, was he talking about the "erotica" exhibition that children can't actually get into?

    what a patronising asshole.

  • Craig Ranapia,

I saw a documentary about the Merry Pranksters and their bus journey once, with lots of archive film. It was a sobering reminder that the freedom fighters were pretty much sexist jerks whose chief expectation of the women around them was to be sexually available.

Well, even now, I find it deliciously ironic how (mercifully few) otherwise impeccably right on gay men of my acquaintance will come out with misogynistic drivel that makes me blush. (My blush reflex is not on a hair trigger, by any means.) If nothing else, darling calling women "fish" is so retro -- and not in a creepy-cool Mad Men kind of way.

  • Steve Withers,

    Got me wondering.....

Is there any other public opportunity for celebrating sex, sexuality and eroticism? Or is the Steve Crowe event all there is?

Is there any way to celebrate these generally wondeful things that WON'T be seen as dirty and exploitative by someone?

    Just wondering.

I do reject the "all sexuality is dirty" or "Sex is slavery nonsense".

I do admit to be profoundly affected by the Da Vinci Code's portrayal of many ancient religions as equally honouring the masculine and feminine aspects of humanity. It seemed so much more natural, positive and healthy than the twisted ideas abroad today......where women who enjoy sex are skanks and men are philanderers.

  • Tristan,

I suspect the police would rather not be there but know if something goes wrong they will be the first to be called so take the view that prevention will be alot easier than having to come down and sort a mess out.

My first response was "And what the hell are your children doing in town on a school day, you moral delinquent?" :) And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't McCroskie all in favour of having the R16 rating of Mel Gibson's Jesus snuff lowered, so parents could legally show it to their children?

Bare breasts - bad, and will turn you into a drooling rapist. Prolonged and eye-watering graphic representations of torture? Well, that's different. Funny how censorship laws (and foreign homosexualists who want to cause the end of civilization one dirty movie at a time) aren't so bad after all.

I saw the Hero Parade that way, even though it wasn't my sexuality. It had a a joy to it, while Crow's thing seems like some dumb fast-food version. But again, I guess that's an aesthetic judgement.

100% agree. masculinity and feminity tend to get ascribed to gender-based roles. the essence of what it means to be masculine or feminine gets lost in the doofing, and the jobs we're expected to adopt because of our genitalia.

am working up a blog on it, just been a bit busy of late.

Meanwhile, if you want to talk about joyless, ugly and offensive conduct in public, I'd ranks Steve Crow well below this ghastly pair of compulsive wankers. Of course, YMMV - but I'm really beginning to wonder whether Winston Peters & Brian Henry wouldn't be looking at spending some serious time in the cell next to Bernie Ebbers if they were corporate CEOs.

  • Mikaere Curtis,

I took my daughter to the Santa Parade a few years back, and was appalled at what a crass advertising gimmick it had become. We haven't been back. I definitely with Craig on this one.

I don't see BoB as being much different, albeit with adult themes. Instead of giving endless oxygen to Crow's parade, how about the hapless ACC doing something useful like getting him to move it to, say 8pm, when all the families that "need protecting" are nowhere near Queen Street ?

I'm certain with will be some women who work near Queen Street who won't be able to avoid the parade and will feel uncomfortable with it, so it seems changing it to a night parade is a good idea. It also means non-CBD workers can get along if they want.

  • Gareth Ward,

Interested in the case law stuff on this - for example in this story, the judge decied there was no offensiveness as part of protest, but that to remain topless after the fact "downtown in Queen Street amongst families who were going about their business and were no part of any protest... would be regarded as offensive by a "resilient, reasonable person".

Has case law since moved on, or has this whole thing been couched in (very flimsy) protest terms?

There is always going to be someone that is offended, especially when it comes to sexuality and especially with people that have imaginary friends.
Besides, what's wrong with being dirty. That's often the best part. lol
It's the tacky sleazy stuff that I get sick of.

  • Damian Christie,

Aww, I came here to talk about breasts, and now no-one is. Stink.

However I would like to nominate the following for "most disturbing line I've ever read in Hard News":

Not only are they profoundly, fundamentally functional, I find them attractive.

(Do other readers have lines from Russell, or anyone at Public Address that disturb them? Send your answers on the back of an envelope to the usual address)

And I find it rather dispiriting -- personally, I found more "joy" when the Human Rights Amendment Bill passing by an overwhelming and bipartisan majority (under a right-wing Government no less!) than some Muscle Mary mincing down Ponsonby Road with his hairy arse hanging out of a pair of chaps. But as that great thinker Sly Stone put it: "Different strokes for different folks, and so on and so on, do be do bo do be." :)
