  • Lambton Quay,

Exactly. It was great show because we Wellingtonians turned up. We got there at 5.30pm.

  • Kerry Weston,

I found that all a bit weird last night watching/listening to it several times.

I was listening to the car radio when they played it - I'd been singing "Lalalalalalla, i can't hear you!" - so i didn't know what anyone else thought it said. all i got was "I...car (possibly can't) and a whole lotta angsty breathing. How anyone got "i shot the prick" outta that, has to be wishful thinking.

  • Steve Barnes,

If you play the tape backwards you can clearly hear him say.
"I fubin' done it didn' I, I'd fuckin' do it agen, woodn' I"
And then the ambulance officer says,
    "?uoy pleh I nac ,ecnalubmA"
    cos its bacwards.

  • Russell Brown,

I was busy last night, but I've just listened to the clip on Stuff, with headphones -- and I'm very surprised at how clearly I heard "I shot that prick", even allowing for the fact that I've been primed to hear it.

I guess I could construe it as "I can't breathe" too, but it's not what I hear.

I can understand why it was not allowed in evidence, but there was more there than I thought there would be.

  • George Darroch,

I just want to say how nice and supportive the man on the other end of the line is. If I ever have to confess to killing on the end of an emergency call, I'd like to have that guy.

  • Jackie Clark,

I wasn't going to listen to it, dammit. But I did. I distinctly heard " I can't breathe".

  • Islander,

    I heard
" I huh shu tuf pruh ah (gap) uh "
    - didnt sound like shock to me (and before anyone asks, yes, I have had quite some (unwanted) experiences of people in shock trying to convey stuff.) It just sounded a bit muffled.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

So maybe those that listened who think he did it heard the "sho" ....." one and those who think he didn't do it heard the "bre"....one. It does sound like the ol' chinese whispers story but I don't know or want to so as you were. But quickly shu tuf could be should have.

Sofie, you're right that soft plosive p & b are notoriously difficult to distinguish (in Southern Maori dialect, even for native speakers.)

  • Islander,

And it's fun to have *really* good hearing!

(Ur, sometimes. One of the reasons I cannot stand living in cities is because I have abnormally good hearing (comes with being extremely shortsighted I suspect.) I cannot 'tune-out' the noise surround', but I can listen & decipher stuff over ambient noise. I've been doing it since - I became consious of myself i.e 4?

I can hear you swallow, mate!

David, you really should have got a crate. The stuff just - lasts...)

Fascinating. I hear "prick", spoken sharply, and clearer than the rest of it.

I'd been led to believe the words were: "I shot the prick, I shot", but I didn't hear that. I heard "I shot that prick."

  • Sacha,

It is amazing how we can all hear the same content in a variety of ways, but I am not compelled by all this second-guessing after the verdicts have been delivered.

Am more concerned for instance with the looming submission deadline about Auckland governance changes likely to affect this country's future for many decades. Bain's utterance, not so much.

  • Russell Brown,

Sacha, you should try and come down for Wednesday's Media7 record (it's a 2pm job, unfortunately).

We're looking at Supercity arguments in the media.

Meanwhile, another forum full of people who hear either one thing or another.
