  • Rich of Observationz,

When that single issue is democracy, accountability and the rule of law, then yes, it does override all other things.

I'm still undecided on whether to renew my already-lapsed financial membership of the Greens. The only thing that stops me walking away is that they are (unlike all other NZ parties) a democratic body. If enough of us get together, we can dump the current bunch of disappointments and elect MPs and leaders with some spine.

(It may be that not all Green MPs support the vote on the Enabling Act. It wad after all a spur of the moment decisipn. If so, then it would be good if they'd declare their views. Unity is a good idea. but only if it's behind a reasonable principle)

Sorry to mythbust, but this is just a case of me being able to read, rather than being the 100th monkey*

  • Craig Ranapia,

Oh for heaven's sake let's not start with the whole American/British English thing eh? What in the world is wrong with cookie?

Nothing, especially when I was alluding to an infamous stand-up routine by Chris Rock:

Niggas always want credit for some shit they supposed to do. A nigga will brag about some shit a normal man just does. A nigga will say some shit like, "I take care of my kids." You're supposed to, you dumb motherfucker! What kind of ignorant shit is that? "I ain't never been to jail!" What do you want, a cookie?! You're not supposed to go to jail, you low-expectation-having motherfucker!

You were aware of the bad decision you made? I'm aware of my haemorrhoids, but I don't expect a pat on the head for my poor diet and excessive straining when I take a dump. I vote for people I think will make GOOD DECISIONS - and I don't deal with disappointment well.

Ben Wilson, some people would insist you belong to "The Third Chimpanzee" grouping...me, I'm happy to belong to Order Primates (we're such a wonderously varied lot!) among the Hominidae-

As long as I'm an ape, I'm happy, I can still travel business class. They don't let any old monkey in there.

  • David Hood,

We have a new saying around the household-
"Should have got Gerry to do it"
it works for everything from people stymied with temporary difficulties, to those arrested because they were doing things that were illegal (at least for them to do)

  • simon g,

So today the open letter from legal scholars has made the news (albeit not the headlines).

    And Gerry Brownlee has responded:

"If they are worried about process then I think they should take themselves down to the people in Bexley, or Avonside or the other pockets of severe damage around the city and perhaps have a discussion with them and see how they feel about it.

"I am strongly on the side of people whose lives have been dislocated, not the hand-wringing academics who frankly are contributing nothing to the recovery effort." (NZPA)

What an obnoxious thing to say. What contempt for those who dare to question his powers, or Parliament's wisdom.

But don't worry. We can trust Gerry.

Could almost have been taken straight from today's Kiwiblog comments thread on the story (barring the lack of profanity).

  • Rich of Observationz,

I think that once those people realise that wealthy property developers are getting a free pass to throw buildings up while ignoring codes, while their sewage isn't being fixed, they might wish they had some democratic influence over the process.

  • Just thinking,

    This isn't Gerry-Maunder it's more Jerry-can.

    What wiki says:
The history of the Jerrycan is notable because it was reverse engineered during World War II. The name of the jerrycan reveals its German origins (Jerry being a disparaging wartime name for Germany and Germans).[7]

This is the reverse engineering of democracy, pulling it apart and seeing how it works. If only I trusted Gerry to know how to put it back together again.

It also implies something that is haphazard and insufficient - e.g. jerry-built.

Another still, small voice: The Law Society expresses concern over the Gerry-mandate (sorry, "wrings its hands").

  • Stephen Judd,

The "hand-wringing" is a real fascist trope. Manly men, leaders (what's the German word*, ah yes, Führer) don't wring their hands, they just kick arse and leave worrying about trivial things like constitutional rights to the weak and effeminate.

    * although in German händeringend connotes desperation, not futile concern over nothings.
