Yeah, but roads are vital to our economic performance. Or something.

  • Sacha,

There's always enough money for some things. What those are tell us a lot about the organisations and the people making the decision.

And it's always a decision even if just to continue doing what has been done.

  • Leopold,

Anything left of your ratepayer-funded sand after this weekend? May have to drop paying for swimming pools while they truck in replacement sand for the rich...

Heh, was thinking the same thing this morning... Point Chev will probably have been sheltered enough from the worst of it, but the resanded eastern beaches may not be so fortunate.

    "replacement sand for the rich"

Most Aucklanders can get to Mission Bay within an hour or so. Having got there they are all free to swim there.

  • Dave M, in reply to Russell Brown,

Pleased the liberal inner west has golden sand now
The sand taken from Pakiri has completed destroyed the surf banks at that beach so that when there was a nice swell last week the entire beach was one big closeout , always a price to pay
However far from encouraging more council spending I think free poll admission is a great idea cut the budget from somewhere else
I have three kids under 6 and teaching them to swim for one half an hour lesson per week costs $45 a week just too much

Up until then, maybe, but as I think Russell has covered, it's not just the rich benefiting from the resanding. Why they even let people from Sandringham use it. Who knew?

  • Jacqui Dunn, in reply to Dave M,

Yes, $45 per week for a bare 30 minutes (X 3, as there are three kids) is a lot of money. Had you thought of hiring a keen young college student instead? Someone who could swim well, and liked children, and would be happy to spend a few hours a week passing on the knowledge? (And be paid for their efforts?)

Sure our beaches are public places (and it's no surprise that wealthier residents tend to live closer what with property prices and all), but you are familiar with reports of young people from South Auckland who have never even seen the sea, right? Transport costs are probably more of a barrier for some than you think they are. It would be interesting to see survey results of how people travelled to Manukau's free pools.

On the upside, there is now a lot more 'Waterfront property! Only meters from the beach!' available along Tamaki Drive.
