There's a detailed account of the traditional uses of kiekie flowers, among other items of culinary interest, in the online version of Rod McDonald's fascinating Te Hekenga, available here. Starts on page 58 of the PDF version. Includes a mention of an extensive and deliberately maintained kiekie 'orchard' of the Muaupoko that once graced the shores of the now sadly diminished Lake Horowhenua.

Raupo pollen?
Raupo rhizomes are a wonderful source of starch - I have baked good bread from raupo rhizome. Not just raupo, but also kuta and most of the other tall wetland sedges have good starchy rhizomes too. If our modern technological society does ever collapse, I'm heading to my nearest wetland for my subsistence lifestyle.

There are a few nice stands of raupo in the Heathcote, but I wouldn’t vouch for their cleanliness…
