Coincidentally, our book group is currently reading The Emperor of Scent, about Luca Turin.
Sadly I have a very poor sense of smell so I'm not really able to join in the general rapture.. -
Hard News: The Mayor's marginal enemies, in reply to
An entire post criticising the opponents of a politician without basically once addressing their arguments? Isn’t this textbook ad hominem?
Well, no, if the substance of their arguments is to hold fringe beliefs about 9/11, vaccination, climate change, fluoridation and so on. It's a total waste of time engaging with their arguments, and to even attempt to do so gives them unwarranted legitimacy.
I see Ian made the same point more elegantly ..

One of the funny ones that once happened in the EC was when an opposing counsel tried to attack my independence because I was a trustee for a grass-roots environmental restoration group in the area of science I worked in.
My grandparents were active members of the Communist Party in England, and it caused difficulties for their eldest son (my uncle, who was a university-based geneticist) when he tried to further his career in the US.

And once we get to Nomination Day, my university will put me on unpaid leave (about 4 to 6 weeks out from the election, depending).
It's great that you don't have to burn any bridges.
There are of course some notable precedents for academics going into politics .. -

Well, thanks again for your sage advice. Guess we'll leave those hoardings down for the time being, or just flash them at sympathetic passers-by.

Thank you very much for that very helpful reply, nzl.
We both work for a CRI, though I'm a subcontractor rather than employee. I can't see CRIs in that list of organisations covered by the state servants code of conduct - can that be right?

Hoping you knowledgeable folks can enlighten me here - is it OK to display party billboards on your property at home if you work for a government agency? Partner says no, I say yes.

Seems like the Basin reserve are on the right track. We got 5 day passes for $90, and if we'd been more organised we could have gotten them for $45. It has been gloriously worthwhile. They've also been applying some judicious discounting - a school friend of my lad's got in for the final session yesterday for $5.

Coming to Wellington as well.

Congratulations RB. This is a lovely Christmas present to your readers here.
On a related note, I was extremely proud of my 14 year old lad when he fluently delivered a mihi to open his school's prize-giving last week. So cool.
