Bread and circuses.....
...'cept that hanging around here the last few days I have my doubts about the bread side of that equation. Hey, at least they're providing the circuses.

when was national in power again?
Huh, yeah, funny how that for the years Labour was in power the registered jobseekers graph has a couple of tiny upward bumps, but is pretty consistently trending downwards right up to the point the shit hit the fan (a collision far beyond the control of any government of a small, isolated country), when it begins it's upward climb, but for all the years National was in power, before and after Helen Clark's reign (granted, there's not a lot of 'before' on that graph) it is, as Keith describes it, rising relentlessly.

Capture: Roamin' Holiday, in reply to
Way long delayed by first an incident involving a very drunk mother in law (one of those 'amusing to look back on' things) and then work.... I sometimes forget such lushness and sheer force of life exists in other, less arid parts of the world. It hits me every time I go to Hong Kong or other southerly regions of China, it quite pleasantly knocked me for six last time I was in New Zealand. Beautiful photos.

On the subject of artists' former residence's, Lao She's old home in the former German concession in Qingdao. Despite what the photo says, we definitely did not go there in 2005... 2009 was more likely. Our old camera decided every year was 2005. Anyways, we walked round and round and round looking for this place only to find it down a tiny lane the map wasn't overly clear about and in a state of repair Russell's photos of Colin McCahon's place reminded me of.

It doesn't look like much, and I must've been past this place a hundred times, and noticed the sign most of those times, but I decided to do a little roaming around my neighbourhood this afternoon and suddenly it hit me - just on an odd side of the neighbourhood, in an area I usually drive rather than walk through and on a corner that doesn't normally allow for taking in the scenery, is a water recycling company.

And none of the usual suspects has pointed out that foreigners investing in China are required to enter into a joint venture.
Um, probably because that is not actually true? Foreigners are banned from some industries for "national security" reasons (scare quotes because that includes publishing - us pesky foreigners are much harder to persuade to STFU about sensitive issues - although foreign publishers can licence brands and content to Chinese publishers), required to enter joint ventures in some industries, and permitted to form Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprises (WFOEs, sometimes called WOFEs for whatever reason) in other industries. But China Law Blog has much more detailed and higher quality information on these subjects.

Hard News: CELEBRITY DRUG SHOCK NEWS! AGAIN., in reply to
Also, is tabloidism largely unique to English-speaking nations? Or is it just a case of the language barrier preventing us from hearing about non-Anglo tabloidism?
Oh, there's just as much tabloid nonsense in Chinese as in English, even entirely fake newspapers that have announced the death of Andy Lau (whose character dies in most of his films, but who was very much still alive last I heard) several times.
