  • Up Front: Staying In, in reply to Emma Hart,

Coming Out is about correcting those assumptions.

But assumptions allow people to deal with the inability to observe every single person as an individual. And before you leap up and say everyone should be treated as an individual consider that there are 6-7 billion of us on the planet and your brain cannot ... simply cannot deal with that.

So you make assumptions. And as you get older you get better at getting those right and hence it is much harder when those assumptions are demonstrated to be false.

What reading Emma's blog teaches us is that even when those assumptions are rudely dismissed some things remains true. She still loves her children and cares about her kitchen and garden. It's enough to make you think ... isn't that fun :).

  • Up Front: Staying In, in reply to Lilith __,

it used to really piss me off sometimes the things he shared

It's part of the deal you have with your partner. I understand why sometimes it's easier to write something down than actually say it to the person you are having a relationship with ... but easy isn't always right.

To be honest there are times when I read some of Emma's posts and think "has she talked this through with her beloved(s)?" and then find in the next paragraph that she has.

    if you google

my name ... oh god how did that video get to the top of google! Don't get me wrong I'm kinda proud of being allowed to say those geeky things on video I just figured it would be buried in the depths of teh intertubes.

And no it had not occurred to me to google my own name.

  • Up Front: Staying In,

    It was a lie.

This is the reason I comment using my name. Not dissing those who use a psuedonym, there are very good reason for people to use psuedonyms, and I'd rather hear their thoughts and experiences and not know their name, than not hear them at all.

But for me, I can't feel I'm being honest with myself if I don't use my own name. Even though it makes my partner cringe sometimes, when I express my opinions or describe my experiences. Right or wrong, I am being honest. And here, I am comfortable enough to be wrong.

It is that element of honesty that makes your posts, that much more compelling. Even if I don't agree with you, or even if what you describe makes me cringe and squirm as it stretches my perception of reality, I know you are being honest and that makes it worth listening.

Bah spent the weekend with a cold chisel and 1500g hammer removing tile adhesive from our kitchen floor.

In my (science-based) experience it’s usually a matter of context; they have the facts, but haven’t put them in the context which makes them accurate.

To be fair a lot of the time our language is too divergent for a lay person to even remotely understand what is being said. But every scientist I know would be only too happy to spend the half hour or hour to explain in lay language, preferably with access to a pencil and paper to draw pictures. The problem we have is most folks just don't care to spend that time.

I couldn’t say for certain, but I feel bad right now for some of the government IT and IS people I know who are really smart and careful at what they do with regard to information and network security

The ones I know – and there are quite a few, including members of the community here – are exactly as you say: smart and careful. They are principled people.

Same experience here. Talented, smart, careful. But incredibly hamstrung by ludicrously incompetent management. Asked to develop capability and then when management sees the plan told to implement it with half the money, as if the IT guys had lied about costs. Which of course is exactly what management would have done.

With respect Keith - you might be getting a bit carried away with yourself.

John you are defending an indefensibly poor job by an MSM reporter and you are doing it by denigrating someone who has just demonstrated his ability as a journalist to find and coherently report a technical story.

The nice thing about this site is the people here can describe shit as shit. The pile of sensationalist drivel delivered in the TVNZ article deserves to be called shit.

  • Field Theory: Man Moments,

What I find interesting is not the sexism, which is blatant obvious and awful, but rather the sheer low quality of the marketing that has been sold to Moa.

It is almost certain that Moa paid a rather large amount of money for this prospectus. The level of fail delivered to them is astonishing. The attempt was to go for the overt sexist joke but unlike Tui there is no balance to the humour and hence the joke is not funny, merely offensive.

That balance takes skill to achieve, expensive skill.

As an advertisment for Moa shares it highlights the fact that Moa management are very poor at judging quality advertising and getting value for their marketing dollar. Since the beer industry is so very dependent on marketing that tells me that Moa is unlikely to be a successful company.

In every way this prospectus demonstrates exactly why you should NOT invest in Moa.
