The Tino Rangatiratanga koru design is much bolder and more appealing
Too bold for some narrow-minded people. For them it's a symbol of separatism.

I can't help but think that the flag shortlist has shades of the Wellywood sign controversy, but on a nationwide scale (and with foreign coverage tacitly smirking at us). And if the whole thing flops and becomes a laughing stock, whatever's chosen will likely be associated with Brand Key rather than Brand New Zealand. Don't be too surprised if it starts appearing on underwear, bikinis, or toilet paper.

The flag consideration panel published this excellent video from the Designers Institute, explaining the principles of flag design, a couple of months ago.
And then apparently ignored nearly all those principles. This process is off the rails.
It's ringing as hollow as the decision made over the Wellywood sign.

Every case I’ve heard of from America has been traced back to kill chains that were not being inspected properly or at all.
Have you read Fast Food Nation? Many of the exposéed practices outlined in that book would probably be illegal in NZ.

Basically they:
- got rid of an oppressive, alien form of government
- had a specialist, Fred Brownell, design a flag to mark thisWe should follow this proven process.
Whatever happens, the chosen design for NZ will invariably be associated with "Brand Key" first and "Brand NZ" second. I predict sales of matches and cigarette lighters will spike up if things turn particularly toxic.

Nos 2 and 4 are committee jobs
All of them look ‘designed by committee’. The koru is the least worst option if a no-confidence vote is unavailable. Or even the spoiled ballot as mentioned above.
The flag design selection carries the whiff of the Wellywood sign controversy, where a lot of neat designs were passed over by the 'judging panel' in favour of a contrived knockoff of a Los Angeles icon.

I sometimes wonder if the Serco thing is more than just misplaced ideological faith. Is someone in a high-up position of authority pocketing big from all this? In other words, something nearly approaching Mark Ciavarella of kids-for-cash infamy.

Another semi-recent burger rant:
You know who fucks up burgers more than anyone else in the world? Australians. Australia has no idea what a burger is. They put a fried egg on their burger. They put canned beetroot on it, like a wedge of it. I am not joking you. This is how they eat their burger.
Methinks he didn’t make it to NZ.
We call it the Kiwiburger.

Not surprisingly, the Nats sacked the nanny!
And I assure you, this column is not an outlier.
Is 'fiddling while Rome burns' the polar opposite of 'nanny statism'?
If 'nanny statism' was the knockout blow for the Clark Govt, then 'fiddling while Rome burns' could be the same for the Key Govt.

Not gonna happen. Apart from anything else, being big and cross-platform might be the only way to survive and prosper in the new media environment. It’s not a good time to be an indie.
Yep, while the Internet has proven to be a disruptive force to old media, it hasn’t caused it to collapse but rather caused it to consolidate. Even then, NZ needs a Royal Commission to look into the whole affair. Bonus points if Tony Fitzgerald, Ray Finkelstein, and Brian Leveson can be on it.
And the only thing Mike Hosking is missing right now is a giant telescreen.
