  • Field Theory: The Undertaker is Hamlet,

There is a case for and against sport being art, I believe.

On the one hand, the great events can occasionally reach such a level of high drama that the whole thing becomes more than the sum of it's sporting parts. The one that stands out for me in recent memory was the 2005 Champions League Final between Liverpool and AC Milan. Two clubs with pedigree and their own histories and culture brought such a weight to the occasion and the events on the pitch surpassed anything a script writer might have made up. What happened that night will never be forgotten by footie fans, even if you don't support those teams.

On the other hand, sports follow pre-defined rules that must be adhered to whereas great art often breaks the rules to create something new.

I'm no fan of opera, I just don't get it, but huge sporting events with uncertainty, drama and high quality performance feels kind of the same to me as what people might get out opera, ballet etc...

  • Stories: The Internet,

First: 1991 at National Library as part of TuiaNet planning

Worst: Heh, so many. Using any Netscape browser from v4 onwards. Pointcast News anyone? The Iridium satellite network, pretty cool actually, just burn that money in a great big bonfire...

Actually, the thing I remember best was bringing Internet into the Tasman District for the first time in 1994 with the help of Chris O'Donoghue from Planet Nelson. It's hard to communicate just how exciting it was starting up a whole new type of communications technology in our region and taking it on the road to show people. We had bags of 14.4 modems and were literally setting up PC's in the children's or newspaper areas of small public libraries and were getting reasonable groups of interested people turning up for their first ever look at the Internet. It felt like times were changing quickly and completely and it was a real buzz.

  • Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

I disagree (naturally :). I would do everything in my power to make sure she did not go through with her plan and I would cut her off if she did.

But surely in your case that's a reason for your daughter to become a prostitute?

C'mon Grant, you're really not thinking this through.

  • Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

OMG, I must totally tell you guys about when I was in IT support for the film censors (Jane Wrightson's watch). You wouldn't believe the stuff they'd have playing in the background on their TVs while someone was trying to explain the architecture of their new system.

Andrew, do the Censors Office have porn filters on their network?

  • Field Theory: The Home Straight,

Hayden, can I just say that I'm enjoying your Olympics blog more than I'm enjoying the Olympics? Very entertaining.

The Olympics is a bit too overwhelming for me and I can't be bothered with most of the sports although I have enjoyed a few moments, especially the super Saturday events.

As an aside, I saw a few minutes of the Tae Kwon Do last night and the way the athletes dance at each other before executing a move brought back memories of discos when I was 12.

  • Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

I grew up in a violence free, rugby-centred household, and that I continue to enjoy watching rugby on TV too.

Hmmm, has this thread morphed a little bit to where 'rugby' has become a comforting code word for some other kinds of activity that may or may not have been mentioned frequently in this thread?

If so, I'd just like to say I haven't watched a huge amount of 'rugby' in my life, preferring to play the game either by myself or with a friend. But this thread is really making me think long and hard about my attitudes to 'rugby' and the people that play 'rugby' for our viewing pleasure and how many subtleties there are in the whole range of responses we may feel to 'rugby'.

Oh, and if I did watch 'rugby' I would most likely prefer a men vs. women game to the men on men stuff.

    Ta.

  • Hard News: Rain on his parade,

Only with better tans and less body hair.

    And more pina colada mix.

    And a worse soundtrack.

  • Hard News: Rain on his parade,

But isn't there a distinction between Pornography (implies violence etc) and Erotica. The arguments seem to lump them all together. Lets have erotica if unharmful and fun.

I always presumed that erotica was the cuddly nice stuff that women like while pR0n was the filthy dirty stuff that us blokes like? :-)

  • Hard News: Rain on his parade,

Well, it might be time to start firing off some OIA requests about how much ratepayers shelled out to waste the court's time -- because ratepayers really love that.

Sure, but that's kind of my point. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

  • Field Theory: Playing Catch Up,

(Actually last night Outrageous Fortune took precedent despite my protestations of "the Olympics only happen every four years!" Maybe I need to think about getting MySky)

All sports fans should have HD MySky. Who knew that Dan Carter suffered from shaving rash? Dude needs product.
