  • ChrisW, in reply to Richard Aston,

I blame it on the parents ...

    Porphyrio rivalry

And good to hear it, thanks Richard.

He put the chick's body on the grass verge and the "family" gathered around it in a circle , doing a slow dance around the body , dipping their heads towards it , went on for ages

Probably they were trying to work out whose it was, who were the responsible parents! Pukeko families tend to be rather colourful rather than black and vanilla. In the sober words of the 1966 NZ Encyclopedia -

sometimes two or three hens may share a nest, all these females apparently being mated to the one cock.

and I gather subsequent research shows there are often dual cocks and greater complications.

  • Islander, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

My brother and his family have 3 peacocks (well, one peahen) at their place.*

He has put up mirrors on the trunks of 3 trees, and they spend an inordinate amount of time admiring themselves…

*It’s an ex-farm, so there’s plenty of room. Because none of them like birds in cages,
the peafowl -and the chooks- roam where-ever they like. And they are excellent fliers-

Must get some photos at Christmas.

Lovin’ that bird, surfin’ is a bit peacock, except here where things are about to go pear shaped thanks in part due to a drop-in, luckily the bottom is sand, off injured for 3 days which lead to me meeting some gypsies (Romany people). Funny how things work out. Mundaka, Spain.

Whoa... what on earth drives that kind of "Look at me!" display.

I am anthropomorphising here but how would that go down in the human world ?

  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Richard Aston,

To be fair, Richard, there are a great number of people around like that - whether they're doing it, like the peacock, to warn people off, or trying to get a mate, or just walking into a room demanding attention. See, I have this theory about vampires. That their blood sucking to stay immortal is metaphorical - what they really did, and do, is suck energy from those around them, and grow more vibrant, as we others grow dimmer and more wan.

Thankfully Stella was born 3 weeks after Missy went east, and a friend needed a home for her. This is a shot of her with her boyfriend of 12 years. Bobby recently passed away. Stella remains well.:)

Oh I didn't even get to pat her the other day, and say hello. She is a lovely lovely girl, your Stella. May I reciprocate with a Ruby photo? All who know me well, know that I am an experienced dog owner. But I have never had a dog in my life who I am quite as in love with.

My first thought Richard was Brynne Edelsten... and then I remembered these are male birds... so any chap driving an Italian sports car, in yellow, red or orange. but maybe all flash cars are our peacock display...

    Sophie, your puppies are gorgeous.
