  • Emma Hart,

And people sometimes ask.... "Why does everyone hate Martin Crowe?"

    LOL No they don't.

  • Angus Robertson,

I'm guessing by the mist outside my window, that we aren't going to be seeing a result in the Rose Bowl today. Which is a shame. And even more of a shame if you are a fan of portents because so far it's been foreshadowing the men's games.

    Uncanny

Yes, loved the bit with Inzamam muttering to himself at the end.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

I love cricket, but as a tailender myself I always find it odd that everyone has to bat but not everyone has to bowl.

Same as Softball. And Baseball (National League anyway, if not the American League).

And isn't it weird how everyone is allowed to shoot at the goal in football, but only the goalkeeper is allowed to use his or hers hands to stop goals being scored :-)

    And ... etc.

  • Ethan Tucker,

With this scenario you'd have the captain have to decide "do I think I can get the other side all-out or do I need to bowl Daniel Flynn's over now?"

I like your suggestion of ten bowlers in ODIs, Stuart. At the rate the ICC is flailing about these days, I give it three years before an official trial.

But let's give Daniel Flynn his due: his left arm slows have brought him six List A one-day wickets. Maybe he imparts a vicious spin by gouging the ball on his teeth.

  • Julian Melville,

If it's essentially invisible to children in over 50% of households, of course the number of players is going to decline.

Because it's a Well Known Fact that we can't do anything that's not shown on TV.

I call bullshit, I grew up in a non-sport-watching household and still managed to know how to play cricket/rugby/soccer before the end of intermediate school. If you want people to play sport, then go play sport!

  • Bart Janssen,

Feel free to call whatever you like.

Please back it up though with some stats better than n=1.

I've seen reports from Britain showing a correlation between free-to-air coverage and participation but since I can't find it then I can't call on your statement either :). Of course even with that it is only a correlation.

Personally I think it's a real effect. Kids play sports that they see their sporting heroes play. No exclusively of course.

  • Hadyn Green,

And this from an email from Dom (of the Dropkicks):

Dude, I really don’t think you have any idea how cricket will capture the hearts and minds of England’s children.

The ashes are coming up, and I don’t need to tell you how big the last win was in 2005. That shyt stopped a nation even more than a 1 inch snow drift. And there is the potential for a rebuilding Australian team turning up having been soundly beaten in two consecutive test series and possibly three consecutive one day series.

Despite recent results, I’m still saying the series is even money right now. Last time the ashes was held in England, an average three lions team beat possibly the best test team there has ever been.

Never, never underestimate the potential for cricket to capture the hearts and minds of England’s kids. In my opinion, cricket remains the ultimate test of physical and mental ability.

I soundly believe that the most successful cricketers are also the most intelligent. Where else can you see players in a physical game succeeding despite obvious technical deficiencies (Steve Waugh). Cricketers are often the most well-spoken of commentators and captains remain some of the shrewdish tacticians in a sport.

    He's right ya know

That can't be. I have all of his hair, in a little box.

  • Tom Beard,

    And giant bats?

We can't stop here, this is bat country!

Actually, administering random psychoactive drugs to the players before they took the field could be interesting. It could be a game of guessing what they're on based on their behaviour, a bit like those old experiments with spiders on LSD and amphetamine.

And slightly on that topic, am I the only one who, when A-Rod is mentioned, automatically thinks of Andy Roddick? I've never heard of that other guy.

But hasn't Emma gone to Foo Camp this weekend? Could Hadyn not mention cricket when it's summer? Although I suppose rugby has started its season now.

Another set of supposedly wondrous new rules is for World Series Netball though with 6 minute quarters why would subs be needed anyway?
