  • Russell Brown, in reply to Tom Beard,

Given that the word "sport" originates in the Old French desporter, "to divert, amuse, please, play", that would indicate that an abstinence campaign would have to be the most anti-sport gesture one could make.

Especially given that a certain part of sports-watching is the sublimated sexual thrill of watching fit young people in not-very-many clothes. I went to Warriors games with an old friend both before and after he came out, and formed the strong impression that watching rugby league while gay was just that bit better.

Is there anything planned in terms of alternative commentary to the games themselves (you know, something a comedic bent that one switches on after having muted the telly)?

    Yup. Jedeye is back.

Ta. Is he any good? The Gialappa’s Band commentary back home sustained me during USA 94 in particular, it was great. When Italy missed the last penalty in the final they shouted GOAL!, which set off an interesting, really alternative period of commentary.

Mind you, the regular Maori TV commentary will be worth a go.

See above, re: unsolicited information as to how many people go to things in Proper Countries.

I was one of those and I think my comment is kinda being misconstrued a little/lot. Point of smoothing first: I kinda think that the RWC has allowed or forced some work that needed to be done to Auckland (at least - I have no knowledge of what has been done further south) to be undertaken without the endless - years - of enzild bureaucratic to and fro in a country staggering under the weight of such things.

Too, having 50-90,000 people, whatever the number will be, spending dosh and having happy experiences in NZ cannot a bad thing in the long term.

And I hope they (being the ardent followers of the game) have a happy ending, as anything else is going to cause grievous national trauma for years - the length of this thread is perhaps a mild indicator of such a possibility. This thread is sprinting towards copyright battle length in a couple of days.

My tweet - I can't speak for others - was a reaction to the endless barracking in the media, face to face and elsewhere I faced about the size of this in international terms when back in NZ. It's disinformation - untrue even. It made no qualitative judgements about our unique national fervour.

I promise to tread more lightly when discussing the hallowed 90 mins in future.

ETA: that fucking cloud thing still ranks as one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen, not having had the displeasure until last month.

On a harbour like ours too..

Oh, fuck. I was tempted to google that bit. I've actually tossing around for airfares to NZ in late Sept - there all sorts of specials going surprisingly - but may keep my safe distance after that. I bet it goes on my passport file.

Fair enough. It was just startling when my (no, really) innocent expression of looking forward to the party got effectively the same response from several different people.

It's unbelievably ugly. It really is like everything McCully touches turns to shit.

On a harbour like ours too.

We do have the Wynyard development, which isn't a world-beater but is good and hugely welcome and encouraging. I cringed when the Prime Minister welcomed it by observing that it might one day rival Sydney.

No. It's Auckland trying to be Auckland -- not trying to be Sydney. That's the point.

PS: Will get on to that email for you soonest. I've been juggling a few things you'll see on the blog tomorrow ...

Ahem – I was in one. And I consider my impromptu Sarah Ulmer haiku a career highlight:

    Sweet Sarah Ulmer
    The nation; the siren calls
    Oh truly, she’s cute

It is the third Google result for “Sarah Ulmer haiku”, but the other two do not actually involve haiku at all.

    Whoops - another tweet :)

It wasn't aimed at you, I promise, but so many businesses in NZ. You try to put money in their pockets but the reaction time is often appalling when put next to trans-Tasman counterparts.

On the other thing, take your time, I'd rather we all did it well and got the desired result - as we will.

Oh, never for a second thought it was. Just ticking things off my mental checklist.

Made a lot of progress on my LATE at the Museum for October this week, and I think I'll have the Great Blend videos and Public Address Radio live performances in place for tomorrow. I'm definitely winning.

designed to take the piss out of crap

Well, that’s enlightening. Yes that describes it fantastically. Yes te idea is to enjoy oneself. Trouble is for those not really interested already feel a little annoyed at the cost “blow” outs ,the perceived expensive unachievable for average kiwi “support” clothing, and regime that is ignoring “locals” trading abilities, local to Eden Park primary school losing it’s playing field for VIP customers wanting a carpark. Streets surrounding Eden Park residents who now with higher rates being treated like the Colonel is behaving in the ad campaign on sky.
For some, it rubs up the wrong way when Sean Fitzpatrick, big, tough one of the only AB’s to have won a cup, Author of book about the sport is bustling around, driving badly in a pink fist wearing a destiny church abstinence ring.
The point of “lighten” up wont work.
Still, hope they win, hope you all enjoy it, if a game comes my way, i’ll probably watch it and probably enjoy it. S’pose I should learn a bit about it, Nah it’ll be better to not then I wont take it seriously.

Nope. For some reason, perhaps those apes who had problems got eaten, things seem to float in appropriate places.

    Holy shit!

Having dissed The Cloud, I now feel bound to point out that I'll be getting down there for a bunch of the free entertainment -- Pitch Black, P Money, Sola Rosa, Nick Dwyer, etc. Subject to weather, those nights look like a lot of fun.

From media reports, I'd formed the impression that it was wall-to-wall Feelers and OpShop at Queen's Wharf. Delight to discover otherwise.

Perspective was rammed home to me when I moved to College Station Texas (pop. ~50k incl. students) it is a twin city with Bryan (also pop. ~50k).

The University had a Gridiron stadium as you'd expect.

It seated (permanently) 77000! When a game was on the towns were empty.

I must be descended from the wrong ape.
I wonder though about quantum entanglement in such situations.
