  • Paul Rowe,

I once had visions of infiltrating the NZRU and staging a coup, but given that to do so you've got to infiltrate a good number of the provincial unions first to even get a look in, much too hard.

IMHO he is far too dazzled by the News Corp money, and is terrified that if he loses that, the Union is in the shit (which it is, given how few broadcasters are in a position to throw that sort of money at the game).

The NZRU's (I'll stop slagging off Tew, because it is union inertia as much as anything that's causing this) inability to see other potential revenue streams (The Japanese would love to host the Maori, or the Crusaders or something similar).

Any company with just one substantial revenue stream would be extremely vulnerable in the same way the NZRU is.

  • Paul Rowe,

Megan, you're right, there is little beyond the S14 coaching positions for these guys to go for. I don't have a solution really, beyond reinvigorating the NPC competition, and making it the bread & butter competition.

The Union is in a bind over someone like Colin Cooper, who has done his dash at S14 level and has nowhere to go but overseas. He sure ain't AB material. (but that's another story)

Wikipedia doesn't "have it" yet, although they have the link to the TMZ story of the trip to the hospital. I suppose I should also say it makes me quite sad.

  • Sam F,

Just about every news source on the web appears to be seized up with people furiously Googling this story.

I can't find anything more conclusive than linkbacks to a TMZ gossip report - workmates report that friends from home have seen it on TV, although whether they've actually seen conclusive reporting or just the secondhand info from TMZ I don't know.

  • giovanni tiso,

Nobody's confirming yet, everyone is still saying "TMZ reports". I bet it's true, though, and it looked from twitter like an LA radio station had it before TMZ put it online.

One can conjecture a number of unflattering scenarios which would cause him to come up with the table story, but it'd be pure speculation.

It would also be the kind of speculation that the more fetid corners of talkback and Kiwibog can spit up without our help. Just saying.

I see Hinton's Crusade has been a success.

I have to ask, why can the coaches not fill the heads of their players with instructions to win by six points, but insist they fill their heads with the words to one of the worst national anthems in existance (way worse than the Aus one)?

Heaven forbid they use that time to practice not dropping the frackin ball (continually the All Blacks biggest weakness is handling errors).

I have a theory about the six points thing. Similar to Bastareud, there was an incident and Henry made up a story to cover it. I don't think he even knew or bothered to care about points differential.

    Quite possibly.

And on 2 counts that would be even worse.

I'm reminded of a tri-nations cricket series in Aussie in... 2001? NZ stopped trying to get close in a (already lost) game against South Africa so that they could lose by a bonus point (about 50 runs), and deny Aussie the second final spot (against NZ). Wouldn't catch Stephen Fleming not knowing exactly what he wanted to do on the field to achieve the desired result.

In fact the big news, and really it's pretty big, is that the Phoenix Suns have traded Shaquille O'Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers (for Ben Wallace, Sasha Pavlovic, a 2nd round draft pick and a pile of cash).

It appears that Orlando have traded for Vince Carter from the Nets. Expect Boston to sign up their own washed up "star" (Nash, anyone?) any day now

  • Hadyn Green,

A while back Paul mentioned Colin Cooper:

Megan, you're right, there is little beyond the S14 coaching positions for these guys to go for. I don't have a solution really, beyond reinvigorating the NPC competition, and making it the bread & butter competition.

As Megan pointed out, Cooper is coaching the JABs with Ian Foster. During the press conference last week Tew was asked (completely out of context): "Any thoughts on the appointment of the All Black coach?"

In his answer (which was mainly, "how about we concentrate on beating France first") Tew said: "we've got a couple of great coaches over in Fiji at the moment". So clearly the NZRU know that there are some talents folks about.

But I think coaches have to be patient. If there are no vacancies, then there are no vacancies. And remember we've chased a few messiahs in the past, including our current one
