Late to this but:
I've been thinking for a while of auditioning for Voices New Zealand, the national chamber choir, and have been keeping an eye out for when the next round of auditions would be - they're usually every three years or thereabouts. What did I discover this weekend? I've been waiting in vain - they haven't been holding rounds for some time because they don't have enough money to fly the audition panel between cities. Sigh.
I was complaining about corporate sponsorship and naming rights a month or two ago. I take it all back.

Hamish Keith does have a cheek running his mouth about the arts establishment in NZ given that he himself is a substantial chunk of it.
Also, as far as Labour’s arts policy goes, here’s the draft Platform, which has a chapter on NZ Identity etc. If you want to go have a look at that and feedback on it, I’m sure the Party (ahem) will take it seriously.

As I said, please feel free to disagree with Hamish. He's not always right (who is?), and when he gets it wrong he doesn't fart about, but it was not only unbecoming, but downright foolhardy, for Claire Curran to be quite that patronizing. And the guy's been pretty consistent with his disdain for government attitudes towards the arts since Holyoake was in short pants, so I'm not sure the charges of self-serving hypocrisy are just.
And it's truly grand Labour is working on a platform. I just hope this time next year, I'm going to be chewing over some policy that's a little lighter on the sounds and sweet airs that will be actioned in the fullness of time when fiscal conditions permit and contain a few more hard, fully-costed commitments they can be held to.
Or put another way: I'm not going to give Grant any passes I'm long done extending to Finlayson.

Art is just such an ambiguous word. Mabe it is the “death of Wellington” and all that implys is what the golden age of art illustrates. Personally, I am enjoying quiet of an economic downturn.
Depends on where the boundary is drawn. There's peace & quiet, and then there's sleepy & boring.
