Free to view online this long weekend - Sound It Out, a documentary about a record store of the same name, the only remaining indie record store in the Teesside area in the north of England.
The doco looks at the store's staff and regular customers - mostly male, mostly over 30. There are certainly no teens around like there were in my youth. The doco visits some of the regulars at home, their listening rooms, their alphabetised collections, their denim vests adorned with patches and badges of their favourite bands.
It's a great portrait of what independent record stores have become in the 2010s. Teens are happily streaming music on YouTube, your auntie gets her Sole Mio CD from the Warehouse, and record stores are left for people who love music and buying records so much that they couldn't imagine life without.

I’m happy for Naked & Famous and all but God help me they’re representative of a dull strand of indie pop. You expect NZ to succeed with something a little off-kilter, like… er… Lorde, but those kids are nothing more than a testament to professionalism.
Rather bland, eh? I'd like a bit more bite and spice.
Meanwhile, Pitchfork lay down a long and comprehensive read on the implications of streaming for music. It's huge.

I have mixed feelings about that article. On the one hand, it contains some notable insights, most from third parties. On the other, it reads like someone's pretentious cultural theory essay. I hate Pitchfork, even when I find it interesting.

I couldn't even get anything up that I could read, seemed to be all kinds of needlessly clever interactive things going on, that are probably too whizzy for my old computer...
@Deep Red...a quite literally full house
and a 'crowded house', even...

1) The 9am record scrum. Honestly, I’ve never been in a ‘entusiastic’ crowd of vinyl lubbers.
2) Phoenix Foundation, Rubber Band Gun Zombie Attack.
3) Spelling Mistakes. What a lot of fun they had, mostly standing up.Real Groovy, where they were very pleased with their day.
I’d say they would have to be.
Got quite a few shots, if you wanted to include any in another post.

Bought that recently at Vinyl Countdown in New Plymouth. Isn't that ironic!

Lorde has postponed her Australian tour dates on account of illness and will return to NZ to rest and get well.
Whatever the issue, I think it's pretty clear she's due a rest.

Trivia: We never could work out what it was called. The front cover of the original release was 'Feel So Good' (as was the APRA registration) but the labels and back cover are 'Feels So Good' (as here).
In recent years we've all decided that we can't decide and 34 years on it doesn't matter. The 2012 7" reissue intentionally repeated the two versions of the title.

...Vintage BFM 91.8 t shirt circa 1987
I've got one of those somewhere - not mint,
but probably sorta smelly...
