I couldn’t get in to the stadium itself, but here’s a peek at the staging and a pic of a “COW” (Cell on Wheels) already in place for next Friday.

    Another great post RB!
That Gil Scott Heron is pure sweetness.
    Really appreciate these Friday posts.
Agree with your post re not pleasing everyone, it's not easy or risk-free putting on a big gig, maybe music fans could give the promoters a break.
    Cheers

Indeed. And you really get an idea of how big the BDO set-up is from visiting the site. They've already been working for days.

  • George Darroch,

Who'd be a music promoter? Not me, that's for sure. I also have never really got the vibe of the BDO, but like Russell states, I'm sure there are many for whom it is a highlight of the year.

One other advantage of the BDO is that capacity is sufficiently high that you're unlikely to have tickets sell out immediately, leaving you facing the scalpers.

As for the Stones: wow, so much hair. I do like the look of Fred Dagg and his mate in the bottom left. Possibly the only music gig my Dad has ever gone to purposefully was Bob Marley at the Western Springs in 1979. Good times.

  • Sol K,

@RB: I agree - $185 for 2+ hours of PJ at Western Springs is a good deal. Can't keep all the people happy all the time tho, the whiners will always find something to moan about. Every BDO I've been to has involved some very sweaty palmed decision making internally and with co-attendees. Some worked out, some didn't! That's all part of the fun ;) My fav sequence so far is still without a doubt Bassment Jaxx, Goldie, Chemical Bros in the super top. My brain exploded.

  • Samuel Scott,

Watch Toro Y Moi. I saw Primus live when I was about 16 and I think it was one the most boring gigs I have ever seen. Show off music.

  • Joshua Arbury,

I assume the professionals have this covered but are the stages in use simultaneously really far enough apart to avoid annoying mixing of sound?

I'm not sure anyone quite knows, and things can go wrong -- the disastrous back-to-back stages at the first Auckland Laneway come to mind -- but hopefully the topography of the site will help a bit. Both the big twin stages point at hills.

Yeah, that wasn't a hard call. I saw Toro y Moi a couple of years ago at Laneway and really liked them.

And, y'know, I probably will see some of you guys :-)

Sol K, that sequence got even better when just outside the tent the Bros & Goldie got stuck into each other. That was mind blowing!

    Good times...

  • Mike O'Connell,

Meantime, here’s a pic from the Western Springs of old. Crowds for the famous Rolling Stones show in 1973.

Led Zeppelin played a three hour set in 1972, Roy Colbert wrote a great review which is on the Led Zep site. Some of the pics there are attributed to Jed Town (I presume, later of Features, Fetus Productions fame).

One can only imagine what those poor Pearl Jam fans will need to get through their set. Colbert and friends procured a bottle of laughing gas, 'pre-loading' to enhance the experience!

The five pieces of the BDO's "Dear Neighbour" mailout, which arrived today.

Of note: Widespread parking restrictions on Great North Road (as far as Pt Chevalier Road) and closure of Great North Road alongside the venue and the St Lukes off-ramp 8pm-1am on the day.

  • Gareth Davidson,

Funny isn't it how people will essentially complain "there's so much good stuff!" rather than "man, there are only TWO bands I want to see, the rest are crud, and I'll me sitting around for four hours between the two".

Meanwhile over in Southern Sudan, no such clashes...

What does it say about parking provisions.

During Pasifika there is parking available at TAPAC/WSC and Motat 2 / Seddon fields is that going to be available?

Heres another tip for music festivals...

If two acts you want to see are playing at the same time.... you don't HAVE to miss out on one..... you can see some of both of them :)

  • Mike O'Connell,

Us folk in Chc get relatively slim pickings in terms of all-dayers like BDO and Laneway. If I could make up to BDO, one band I'd be checking out is Arcade Fire - their Reflektor video is pretty cool, directed by Anton Corbijn (who also directed Control in 2007).

  • Craig Ranapia,

Laneway lost Lorde and James Blake to the Grammys. (And it could have been worse – it turned out that quite a few of the Laneway acts were in peril of Grammy noms this year. The promoters were sweating.) But they’re moving ahead with their respective giant parties.

And for fuck's sake, Lorde is doing a (free) make-up show and I understand James Blake would have been happy to do the same if his tour schedule had allowed. Give the promoters some credit where it's due, because there's plenty of form for similar situation ending up in places where the only winners are the lawyers.
