Think an afrobeat band in the 1980s forced to play american top 40s radio hits... It's gonna be fun.

  • Russell Brown, in reply to Paul Waite,

Proof of your thesis (for me) Russell is that when I heard the sister’s song it immediately reminded me of the McRae number, then scrolled down and found it was the very same!

It was the opening oooooh-ooh that got me going.

hopefully that’s just the lazy publisher’s PR rather than from the book…

  • Grant McDougall,

I'm pleased a handful - as such - of Prince's NZ fans got to see him, but why in such a smallish (given his status / popularity) venue ?

He could've packed out Vector Arena, surely ? I can only assume his management were badly advised as to potential audience size / popularity ?

  • Geoff Lealand,

Oh, bugger! Anthonie Tonnon has been my most-played music this summer (so perfect for long road trips) but I have a prior commitment in March 11. My colleague Gareth Schott is playing at the Hamilton Fringe Festival.
But I do have Sufjan Stevens next week.

Sometimes, there is too much to see and hear over the summer months,

Nice! Although I'm scared that listening to it in the daylight will break the spell ...

I've been really looking forward to it – and now I have to have minor surgery (getting a pesky lump cut out of my nose) the day before and won't be able to make it. Bah.

  • Hugh Wilson, in reply to Russell Brown,

The Lijadu / McRae spot is a good one, well done!

Theres another Lijadu Sisters song which is semi well known – Life is gone down low

I happened to find the Lijadu Sisters ‘Double Trouble’ album in an op shop last year (alongside Don Cherry & Buddy guy albums no less!) – a ‘needle in the haystack’ moment for sure, but hopefully not my only one :)

re: Afro Disco, not sure if you saw my post referencing voodoo funk’s Frank Gosner about two weeks back – I think his excavations / releases could be up your alley, as would the mighty William Onebayor (theres a good documentary on him as well, which is worth tracking done – Mr Fantastic or something, if my memory serves me well)

    Score!

I found a well-priced copy of the Rough Guide compilatiion (which has some other great tunes) via Discogs. It's costing more to ship from Canada than the LP itself costs, but it's still a good deal.

Yeah, the show he just played in Oakland was in a venue with a mere 3000 seats.

(I was at the 10pm one in Auckland and it was truly one of the greatest live musical things I've ever seen.)

Sticking determinedly – well okay, desperately – to my "Yah, he was great when I saw him in 1986 too" talking point.

It sounds like it was awesome.
