  • Chaos Buddha,

Same here, that's why I'm boycotting all of Dunedin!

. . . unfortunately, that won't work for us Aucklanders, as we're all already boycotting everything south of the Bombay Hills. Apparently.

    Flashmob, anyone . . ?

  • Russell Brown,

Just one point Russell, you say Jackie is a teenage employee. I'm not sure where you got that from, but I first met her some ten years ago at a friends 21st party, and she was certainly late teens at a minimum then. Ten years later, teenage wouldn't be accurate at all.

    Duh. I'll correct that.

  • Riddley Walker,

yeah i get too freaked out by all the questions to go to subway. i know i'l look silly if i just ask for a piece of lettuce and some straw.

and yeah, what slarty said. the 'franchise defence' is a crock.
"our brand means consistency of product and quality"
"our brand does not mean consistent professional conduct"

  • Phil Palmer,

The last time I went for a Subway, the minion started making it and then went into the back room. Oh, I thought, run out of some ingredient. She emerged in hat and coat and went home. Not a word to me, I was left standing there like a ninny. Of course, I now realise that customer service is something you can get fired for, but back then I just thought it was rude.

  • merc,

    R. would you sit on the floor to make your order or ask to be picked up and put on the counter? I know what Rosa Guinea would have said,
"I'm not ordering my straw from the counter today!"

  • Emma Hart,

I can't go to Subway, ever, it's the freaking endless demands.

Taking the kids through the ordering process at Subway is my partner's idea of purgatory. But the kids could order Subway through school by ticking boxes on a card - this bread, this meat, these vegies. I'd love to see 'em do that in the shops.

I love Subway. But I'm already boycotting my favourite breakfast cereal because Dick Hubbard is a homophobic jerk and my favourite fish because Sealord advocates whaling. This'll hurt a whole lot less.

  • Che Tibby,

subway seems to have worked for that fat bloke who shed kilos by going there.

maybe he never actually was served anything.

it was just the walking there, being severely disappointed, and walking home that slimmed him down.

all that said. there's nothing quite like mystery meat in a stale bun to kill my appetite. hmmmmm.... deep fried baby dolphin....

For those who think web petitions are useful (I suspect in most cases, they're not, but there's always an exception): http://www.rehirejackie.com/

(If that works, I'll be starting my own one, http://www.paykylemore.com/ in the near future)

  • hamishm,

Holcrofts writing is really good. I couldn't imagine seeing such writing in any weekly magazine from NZ anymore. The Listener is a bit of a worry isn't it except for Wide Area News of course! The editorial is usually worth reading though, just for some aspects of issues that I might not been exposed to. But I don't bother with Joanne Blacks contributions, it is just uninteresting and even wrong headed (eg. the speeding issue). While I didn't agree with Steve Braunias a lot of the time he was interesting to read and could bolt some good sentences together. It didn't hurt that he was a Westham United fan.

Did Hocroft retire to Bulls, or is that my so-called memory playing me false?

I saw Steve at the baker's yesterday. He commented that PA System appeared to have become a nest of West Ham fans.

That proves PAS to be a nest of round ball worshipping vipers! That's it, I knew it all along, Ellis didn't pick up the bloody ball for nothing you know and The Invincibles showed 'em, Koiw's are Better Britains!

    ninny

    hehe, i like "ninny".

che, i like the dart a lot but i keeping wanting to click on it. and i have come to think of you as looking like buck/deano.

m, most of the time they just ignore me, or chase me with a broom, mistaking me for an altogether different rodent. now that's bad service. now i usually take one of those Little Giant step-ladders so i can order from the counter. generally i prefer drive-throughs to save the hassle of taking the ladder.

  • Ben Austin,

So let me get this straight, a few of you don't like Subway because they offer you the option to customise your sandwhich? You are angry a fast food restaurant tries to pander to your tastes?

Are your gold boots too tight as well?

I guess it depends whether you consider deciding between plastic chicken, plastic turkey, and plastic cheese is "choice". It's certainly "choice", in an sarcastic 80s meaning of "choice" way.

I always feel inadequate in these discussions...I've never Subwayed and have only Starbucked once (in Bangkok which gave me hours of guilt (and flatulence)....there is nowhere good to eat or drink in BKK).

to be honest, the last msm commenter who inspired me to read them regularly was leunig.

the rest is, all, just, a bit, dull, really.

much like the fried chicken from kentucky. you go back because you think it'll be good, but mostly you end up coughing up flem and feeling let down.

    what happened to inspiring writing?

has "fast food media" got us as well?

  • Bart Janssen,

deciding between plastic chicken, plastic turkey, and plastic cheese

Well the thing I like about Subway is the food is pretty much real. It may not be the best sandwich you could make but the bread isn't sweet and the lettuce is actually green and in NZ the cheese is actually cheesy and the chicken actually looks like it's chicken. So it isn't that bad a sandwich

But I'm still gonna Boycott them for a bit. And while I realise that it was only one stupid franchisee, the best and most powerful way to get a change made and to make sure it is enacted across the whole chain is to affect sales figure across the whole of NZ.

Compounding the offence? (link to my blog FWIW)

I don't imagine Subway will be hurt by any resolution of mine not to got there, considering. My main contact is walking past a place on the way to work where the smell they pump onto the streets is like dried thyme and hot foam rubber. I once overheard someone saying they liked the smell. Different worlds, there - though whether through nature or nuture I was unable to determine.

There's a protest in Auckland on Saturday too btw.

I'll observe that if RB and DPF are both doing it, it's probably not just bloggers boycotting Subway. I have to say I do feel some sympathy for every other fanchisee, but not enough that it would effect any plans I might have.
