  • Kumara Republic,

50 pages and nearly 1000 responses. Surely a record breaker.

It's nearing the record set by the Veitch thread so far.

A big hand to the incoming Obama presidency.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Rather they are looking at the Bush mythology of "us" versus "them" as if there were some deep, fundamental difference of essence and then pulling the rug out from underneath it

First, I don't think that's a mindset peculiar to George Walker Bush but moving on... I think you've put a finger on why my favourite character on BSG is Caprica Six -- whose arc from the mini-series (the mercy killing of that baby in the market was the moment I really got something remarkable was happening) to the muthafraking doozy of a cliff-hanger she's on hasn't pulled the rug on "us" and "them". It has left that character in a place so far beyond "us" and "them" -- so full of the audacity of hope, all mixed up with guilt and wonder and shame and uncertainty -- it truly is awesome.

In a funny way, it's almost a shame Tricia Helfer so effortlessly fills out a well-cut red dress, because the quality of her work seldom gets the praise it deserves. Miracles of miracles -- a model-slash-actor who can act!

In the spirit of that, I'd like to say that I now believe, that if we all work together, there is nothing, nothing that we can't make be all about science-fiction.

  • Joe Wylie,

    :

. . . his bedroom had deep, deep purple walls, a forest green carpet, and banana yellow ceiling. And flashing strings of LED lights nailed to the walls.

I'm wondering if this was a very long time ago and the teenage son was Richard Prebble. Because apart from the LED lights he used to dress like that.

Too bloody right. I have seen reality, and it has no satisfactory narrative structure. It just dribbles on and on and on until you fall in a hole at the end.

  • Rich Lock,

I'll just drag this thread a little further off-topic...

the mercy killing of that baby in the market was the moment I really got something remarkable was happening

Interesting that you interpreted that as a 'mercy killing'. I read it more as having more of a teenage-type jealousy/wonder-what-happens-if-I-do-this/because-I-can component to it.

Which might fit in more neatly with what you were saying ealier about the cylons being teenagers. They don't necessarily think through their actions fully, they're not fully in control of their emotional responses, and they do stuff on impulse just to see what happens.

Only if we make that Science Fiction and West Wing. Which is starting to creep me out with the similarities. I think Aaron Sorkin is actually the Wizard of Oz, pulling the strings behind the US govt.

I could cope with all the fussing and fighting on this thread, but not with the Sci-Fi. People, there is a big grown-up world out there, which is filled with much better stories, both real and imaginary, than you will find on those children's programmes you watch.

    A great moment, that.

Stewart and company will survive. Joe Biden will doubtless provide adequate gaffes to keep things tipping over, and - failing a miracle - the GOP will remain a hotbed of wingnutry. Especially if they keep Palin on.

No no, Rich. You misunderstand. Paul is cleverly affecting that pompous, pretentious attitude, for the purposes of mocking just the sort of sneering tosser he is feigning. It was all done tongue in cheek. That's right, huh Paul?

Ha ha. Try Dave Langford's regular "As Others See Us" quotes on Ansible.
