  • A S,

    On Maori bailing to Oz:

The most interesting question from my perspective, and one that never really gets discussed is why have 20% of the total Maori population left for Oz?

The fairly recent publication on Maori in Australia had some extremely interesting findings around motivations for leaving NZ for Oz that were pretty much ignored in most discourse.

Funnily enough, it seemed from the research that a lot of people went to Oz to escape the pigeon holes they were stuck in here. Perhaps asking people why they feel freer in Oz than they do here should be the basis of a fairly important discussion?

I also wondered whether you were actually allowed to record a conversation someone without telling them what you were doing.

  • Kyle Matthews,

They did not such thing, Kyle. They were invited, allocated four questions and were not required to submit them to MFAT, Winston's office or the US State Department for approval beforehand. If Winnie feels "disrespected", perhaps he's nobody to blame but himself.

    I didn't mean physically crash.

I meant, ask questions that had nothing to do with Foreign Affairs at the moment that Winston is gloating at getting to sit next to a significant foreign dignitary, and try and embarass him in the process.

  • Kumara Republic,

    Mikaere:

One thing we need to really start discussing is population growth. How many people is too many ? Is Auckland full ? IMO, a lot of the value of living here derives from the comparatively low population density. Uncrowded beaches and all that.

Then again, one's tranquility is another's boredom. Also, places like Los Angeles that were originally established on the above premise eventually did urbanise, but only after the development of the freeway system and suburbanisation. And what happened?

Unless someone forms a Unabomber militia and/or sets off a thermonuclear device, NZ's population will continue to grow on current trends. So there are two ways to deal with growth - build outwards or build upwards. Vancouver seems to be a model example of the latter.

In these respects, I'm whole-heartedly in agreement with this post on WellUrban.

I'd suggest got even more mad.He also said to National that he will deal with them next week.I suspect his point is, if you think NZ First is acting illegally, take a look at ACT and proceeded to bring up stuff that can fall into the same category as undeclared donations.I look forward to next week.

  • Jeremy Eade,

Has Winston gone even more mad?"

He's going to make this a character debate. From what I hear down the line these politicians know each other very well. I guess he feels his character is a mess and his defence is, "have a look at this place."

"he who is without sin" and all that shit.

So what is political sin? That could be established in the next couple of months.

I also wondered whether you were actually allowed to record a conversation someone without telling them what you were doing.

As far as journalism is concerned the rule is pretty much as follows:

You can record a conversation without the other person knowing but you can not broadcast that recording (ie via TV or radio) unless you've told the interview subject before-hand that the interview is being recorded.

However this protocol is not always adhered to depending on the relative news value of the interview/story. A notable example was the expose in 1998 of former Chch Deputy Mayor Morgan Fahey where one of his victims elicited telling comments in a secretly recorded encounter.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

The Great News Paper, Nor' West News (fortnightly community news paper for the North West Suburbs of Christchurch) has followed up on the story that ACT candidate Aaron Keown is blaming Clayton Cosgrove for the tragic death of his Mum who was killed in a car crash caused by "boy racers" (a three car crash and the two at fault were 25yrs & 18yrs) earlier this year.
Cosgrove has reacted with some class to Keowns emotional out burst. ACT was the only political party to vote against Cosgroves Boy Racer Bill in 2003.
This only matters if ACT get above 5% as Keown could enter Parliment on ACTs list. Waimakariri is pretty safe Labour as ACT polled 100 below Legalise Cannabis last time.

Having had a look through the 3 or 4 free community papers this week, each one had a couple of great little stories in them.
It's just a shame it couldn't be consolidated on one good solid local paper, rather than the rehashed national & international wall paper that comes out every day in The Press.

Could someone do a bit on investigative journalism on David Henderson, and the Christchurch City Councillors personal investments in his operations?
The Press has come back with CCC doing a bail-out of one of his failing ventures in Christchurch - Chanery Lane.
Why did the pubs go in first at SOL Square & who gained from that?

Which one Shep.? Could it be if CCC buys building off Henderson that they lease space from, can it then develop Turners and Growers site (helping__ our__ Ellerslie Flower Show) and by keeping meeting closed, it wont divulge price paid for flower show ? How well does your Mayor know our Mayor eh?
Also the old "Build it and they will come" could be the concept to bring residents into the area of your SOL Square,By Dave Henderson, and Council partner.
But yeah but, nah but, I think it sounds like cushy deals there. Probably considered good economic sense by the Mayor (that seems to like Mr Henderson)
