  • chris,

sausage fest that is Babyboomer culture.

For the most part, you'll find most of the heavy hitters around these parts (and generally these days) are Generation Jones not baby boomers, so they be jonesing.

Hence the marketing nirvana the world has find itself in of late.

  • Jackie Clark,

I refuse to believe there are people who both like The Jam and Leonard Cohen.

What tosh, uroskin. I like Mick Hucknall, and Phoenix Foundation. I like Elton John and Amp Fiddler. I like Bananrama and Cities of Foam. Shall I go on? It's called eclectic tastes . Not into music snobbery, me. I've said it before in this forum, and I'll say it again. Much like art, we all like what we like. And if we all stopped being so wanky and superior about other peoples' tastes, and just got on with enjoying our lives, we'd all be a bit better off.

Hear hear Jackie! And while I happily deride the quality of some art/music/food et al, I am not thereby impugning other people's tastes.

Jackie, sound syllogism. Taste Nazism has become far to prevalent. When aliens discover our records a million years henceforth they'll observe a myriad of conventions with limited irregularity, akin to comparing grains of sand.

However Uroskin does appear to have been making a joke; a phenomena also prone to convention with limited irregularity.

And per chance he is as well off for playing the taste Nazi card as you are for being both eclectic and gracious. Furthermore perhaps you are as well off for besmirching his taste Nazism and in turn your criticism of his taste Nazism may leave him better off. Any subsequent rebuttals may hoist you both off the blissdar.

Perhaps I'm being petty, but for my money the biggest problem in all this is that Nazism just isn't spelt as it sounds, I propose a revamp. Am I allowed to do this? It's Sunday.

    Naziism or Nazyism?

  • Joe Wylie,

    Naziism or Nazyism?

    Nartsy-fartsy.
If we can have taste nazism, how about birth nazism?
F'rexample, making snide cracks about one's fellow citizens as "baby boomers" - originally whistled up here, rather disappointingly, by Mr Brown. The miraculous prescience of the unconceived who, through sheer foresight, somehow managed to decree the very decade in which their progenitors got jiggy.

Once I've managed to lay hand on all that elusive disposable income that's somehow my ill-gotten birthright, and blow it on an eclectic mixture of concert tickets (Joanna Newsom! Motorhead!), I'll top myself for the public good . Promise.

  • Islander,

Good point, Joe Wylie - I didnt choose to be born in 1947, and as for 'disposable income that's somehow my birthright' !!!! Why, it has somehow managed to elude all my siblings, and their partners - but quite a bit of OUR income is/has devolved to the next generation.

I could top them for the public good?

  • chris,

I'm hoping we can fix this damned language Islander.

    Nazïsm

it's grand, it even looks European.

and as for 'disposable income that's somehow my birthright' !!!!

through sheer foresight, somehow managed to decree the very decade in which their progenitors got jiggy.

I sense discontentment. The powers that be at least had the gumption to give your team a decent evocative name

  • Islander,

Ur chris - I'm babyboomer. My sibs' children are Gen X-

the umlaut changes pronunciation - but I await a grammarian to explain why.

Yeah, I mean despite the stereotypes, baby boomer sounds pretty cool, out with a blast.

  • Islander,

Without commenting on the impertinence of your query, simply because that is what happens after a war? Wellknown, since very early times. And after such a widespread lengthy war, humans were doing what humans have always done - breed fast, to renew the numbers lost-

    Big O, Mahitahi, Te Wahi … • Since Feb 2007 • 5643 posts Report

  • Jeremy Eade,

Yeh, but it's still a large bloc of a generation in numbers at least. You have to plan for every time that mass of generation hit services because they hit them in bulk.

    and we're living considerably longer.

  • Joe Wylie,

Robyn Hitchcock - Young People Scream

Young people scream, but the old they don't hear what they say
Young people dance, but the old they just get in the way
Young people laugh, but the old they just don't want to hear
Because it's all been done before and baby, if it hasn't they don't care

Old people, they make young people scream
Old people, they make young people lay down and die

Old people envy the young all their vigor and rhythm
Soon they'll be dead and they want to take everyone with 'em
With their leathery skin and their shriveled old underwear too
They're stuck in the past and they'll never do anything new

Old people, they make young people scream
Old people, they make young people lay down and die

Young people always get hot when there's something to say
Senior citizens got us in this mess today
Apples and pears when they're ripe they fall down from the trees
Old people cling on to life like some kind of disease

Old people, they make young people scream
Old people, they make young people lay down and die

  • Islander,

    What's 'old'?
According to my kauri neighbour (who dances beautifully with wind) it's about 10 centuries?

And, actually, I pity really young people (human) rather than envy 'em.
    Life's hard - and they'll learn that.
