Oh, and Morning Report this morning said a poll had found the public divided on McCain's proposal to suspend the electoral campaign and cancel the first debate. But they forgot to say it was a Zogby poll. SUSA has now done two rounds on the issue and found twice that American voters think that's a stupid idea.

I thought ACT was supposed to be the Liberal party. I thought they believed that people should spend their money however they wished. But then, this is a Get Carter issue, so normal market rules do not apply.

The Nelson College ( The oldest state school in NZ) scholarship may have been won by Ernest Rutherford. Who, following his older brother, was awarded it on his second try in 1887.

No, I was attacking the medium for a reason, those polls were reported yesterday by Kos. Besides, Zogby (motto: 'making goose entrails seem reliable by comparison since 1988') should ring alarm bells among journalists worldwide.

the best story yet written on how the methamphetamine trade works in New Zealand, courtesy David Fisher. It really is that good.
But how do I know it's true? Very little else in the Listener is, except maybe the TV listings. Most articles on drugs in the NZ media are a farrago of prohibitionist sensationalism, "researched" by talking to a bunch of cops, drug testers, social authoritarian politicians and others with a vested interest in keeping the "War On Some Drugs" going.
I'm certainly not paying $2.50 or whatever the Listener costs to find out. (I haven't paid money for an NZ periodical in over a year - I'm sure the National Party will drop some leaflets through my door in the coming election without my having to pay for them).

So, the scholarship is both perfectly legal and in line with innumerable precedents.
In light of this, I'm looking forward to establishing the first scholarship specifically targeted to skinny white Labour voting heterosexual men from Waitakere City.
I think I might make myself the first recipient of this prestigious award, and go on holiday.
p.s., was Brash complaining about the Maori-only scholarships, or about preferential entry for Maori to the more competitive University programmes (the quota/affirmative action system common in Law & Medicine)?

Both. The Nats lined up some kid at Otago Uni to complain about his "race-based" scholarship (presumably, he was forced to apply for it by the PC police).
It turned out that his scholarship was actually from Ngai Tahu, who offered it for young people who could claim the appropriate heritage. But of course, the actual facts as such didn't have a whole lot to do with that debate ...

It wasn't very exclusive as that could mean almost anyone could get it.Scholarships aren't a problem they're a part of the solution. We need more of them, or address the reason for the need by having Universal allowances and nil fees.

Because Chris Carter, MP and Minister of Education, is patron of Gaba. He played no role in creating the scholarship, but his name appears on the letterheads.
Yeah, and that's the one tiny bone I have to pick with GABA about this non-issue. (If they want to spend their money on rather absurd scholarships, not my affair.) Didn't anyone think "this might well be one announcement the freaking Minister of Education's name shouldn't be on". But whatever...

On a happier note, you might want to pop over to Bob Dylan's website for your free download of 'Dreamin' of You', from his forthcoming album Tell Tale Signs, No.8 in the Bootleg Series of rare and unreleased material.
There’s a delightful stripped down version of Mississippi from the album available free as well.
Also recommended is the just released children’s illustrated book of the lyrics of Forever Young.
Paul Rogers who did an earlier book of jazz greats, takes us into the Greenwich Village of the sixties with lots of visual clues to Dylan’s music- some explained at the end and some left for the trainspotters. The book has a theme of the torch being passed through the generations via the symbolic handing over of guitars from Woody Guthrie to Dylan and from him to the children and the future. Great present for a young’un in your life.
Dylan is doing his bit for literacy too with some of the proceeds from the seven concerts in his October tour of Canada going to the Raise a Reader programme.
