[Sonic Youth answer deleted]
oh yeah!

Yes, Jackson's judgement on the NZFC will not be without problems. He is not a New Zealand film-maker per se; he is a New Zealander who makes films in New Zealand for a global market. The Commission fills the gap for the things he doesn't do.
I just hope it won't be business/business/business and that 'culture' will get a look in somewhere. But given that he will be assessing things in a partnership with an Aussie from the business side of film, I wonder if it will.

mic weevil, you need to hit Reply and email with the answer...

I was halfway through entering the comp when I went back to the post to check what the subject line needed to say (Ciccone Youth!) and was saddened to see that it had already been given away.
Wot, does this mean I'll have to actually buy the album?
-
As I type, there's one Take Me Back ticket left, and that's it.
The way to motivate PA readers to act with the utmost dispatch is to offer them free shit.

Call me cynical (I know you will) but it looks to me as if Jackson was chosen for effect. That nice Mr Key's government is all about Getting Things Done, which is all about appearances really. Getting our hero film maker to sort out the Film Commission is exactly the right mix of celebrity and activity the Government needs to give the appearance of purpose.

I enjoyed the fact that Dakta Green pipped UFNZ's Judy Turner (by three votes- 85/82), although he drew level with the Kiwi Party's Simmone Dyer. However, in fifth place and pipping them both- Ben Boyce (Bill and Ben)- 151. Wonder if the rumours about the Mascot running next time are true...?

Ah, too late. I knew that damn Sonic Youth answer, too. It came up from the depths of my brain all unbidden-like, which is very rare.
You don't happen to have two free tickets to the Ghostface Killah show tomorrow night, do you Russell? :)

The producer-vs-director divide seems to be an issue the world over:
-
I have no idea whether Peter Jackson's right or not. What I would guess is that he's already fully made his mind up on the subject, which doesn't seem to me to map with the idea of a review. Surely a review is meant to involve hearing all opinions and producing a set of recommendations based on that. They might as well just skip the review and get Jackson to write a paper.
It's a bit like having a copyright review and getting either Richard Stallmann or Bill Gates to run it.

Sorry. I think we might not be the core audience for the promoters of that show ...
But here he is on yesterday's bFM Drive:
-
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Mr Jackson to provide any position in the forseeable future. If it takes him as long as it has taken to remove the rusting hulk used in King Kong and still tied up at Miramar wharf thern change will be a long time coming. In this vein he also promised some 5 - 6 years ago that the old Capitol movie theatre in Miramar (which one of his companies owns) would be a state of the art local cinema by summer - and that is still an empty shell. Perhaps hiring the rich and famous for this task is a mistake rather than finding someone who is still connected to the roots of the community he purports to have such involvement in.

3410,
My instinct is that Jackson's report could be a great thing. There are certainly problems with the comission and it's long overdue for a philosophical shakeup.
IMO, what's needed is a lot more funding for low-budget projects (with no requirement for commercial success.) With just 4% of it's annual budget it could provide twenty $50,000 packages for new filmmakers* (digivideo at that price, I guess.) Sure, 95% of them would be crap, but after couple of years, you'd start to see some real talent emerge. 3 or 4 features a year will just not see that happen.
The point is, surely, to best utilise NZ's filmmaking talent. Too many talented people are just out of the loop at the moment.

*add half again for the management of it, I suppose. -
3410,
Oh, and short films don't count. $100,000 for 5 minute pieces with no dialogue is part of the problem, not part of the solution.
-
I'd like to see them co-funding kickarse music videos. Dialogue largely sorted. :)
-
And multiple global revenue and marketing avenues.

Geoff Lealand:

In principle, but it's hardly been the case oer the past decade.
3410:Oh, and short films don't count.
Right. Shunted over to Creative NZ as part of the NZFC think big approach of the past decade. Will be interesting to see if Jackson addresses this.
-
3410,
the NZFC think big approach
That's the crux of the problem, IMO.

Great Historical Society Russell, I'm with you on the Voom. What genius! Glad you mentioned Johnny (sp?) Pain's b logo. Not enough people remember that. Perhaps Kevin Roberts would call it a Lovemark even.....

The thing is, I think I once saw a knock-off of the b logo on a t-shirt in Poland, of all places. I've always wished I went up and asked about it.
Perhaps Kevin Roberts would call it a Lovemark even.....
Could we not go to that place?

Are you saying Jackson's appointment is an example thereof?
-
BFM - the halcyon (or was it Halcion?) days...
Russell - fabulous oral history...
Great you mentioned (and credited) DBGB (that's Debbi Gibbs to the rest of ya) - when is she gonna do a spot from the Big Apple (or wherever she is these days...)?
I still remember helping out on the first Books of BiFiM and Chris Knox's and Dave Mitchell's great graphix for that radio rag and BFM gig and album covers .. and wonderful nights (and Saturday afternoons!) at the Windsor - when I was either on the door or in the crowd...
And don't forget to mention that photgrapher Chad Taylor's new novel The Church of John Coltrane is only available in French in France (they really are a bunch of world beating winners!) no takers in the English or Kiwi world - losers...
,,, and yes that John Cale gig at the Gluepot was pretty wonderful wasn't it ...
- I was side of stage and his piano set was life-changing, hell the whole night was... Doug Hood should receive an award for bringing virtually all living members of The Velvet Underground thru NZ at some point - as well as many other crucial acts.
Speaking of City Gates - do you remember that BFM/Headless Chooks Cricket game that went too long and we were all locked in the park after twilight...?
Who needs an old man on a bike - eh?yrs

I can see the idea behind producer-based funding from the NZFC. If you are doling out public money and have to give reports to your political masters about where that money went, you'd want to entrust the dosh to a person who is used to controlling the money side of film-making.
I think the commission was afraid that the creatives might just take the money and scurry off to do cool stuff. Their reports would read something like "Oh, yeah, money... right... yeah, we spent some getting some cool shots of sunsets off the Coromandel. Didn't end up using it but it looked fabulous!"
Try tabling that before the Minister of Arts.

Mr Desk, may I introduce you to my intimate friend Mr. Head... I'm not sure that's really part of Jackson's brief, but I sometimes wonder if what really needs to get worked out is the more bizarre manifestations of cultural nationalism.
