Another one: If you don’t eat your crusts, your hair won’t curl

For strange reason, no-one EVER said that to me at any time. My curls have always rampaged wildly and tendrilled out to capture whatever is near...

My dad seemed to like grouse and geez Wayne when he was less old. I'm pretty sure I would've heard geez Wayne from the telly when I was an ankle biter, but I'm not quite old enough to actually remember that phrase from any mouth other then my dad's.

'Bugger' is old fashioned now?! Bugger.

"By hook or by crook". I seem to remember my mum using that a lot.

I used the word twatcock at a journal club and then had to explain the reasoning behind it (it was fairly obvious what it meant:)).

Anyway the student LOVED it and declared her intent to use it in future. I think that's a PAS success story :).

I missed that one: is it equal opportunity profanity? Where did it originate?

  • Islander,

I really love twatcock - it is an equal-opportunity insult and deserves to be WORD OF THE DECADE- yes!

  • Russell Brown, in reply to Hebe,

I missed that one: is it equal opportunity profanity? Where did it originate?

It was the Public Address readers' Word of the Year 2010! From the press release, which was titled 'We are all twatcocks now':

Public Address founder Russell Brown says the result demonstrated the Public Address reader community’s enduring fondness for neologisms. Like 2007 winner “Te Qaeda” and 2008 finalist “rofflenui”, “twatcock” is a portmanteau word.

Brown says the word, coined by Wellington Public Address reader Tom Beard in the course of a discussion about former Breakfast host Paul Henry, was adopted by other readers two months before the Word of the Year voting was opened.

“Sometimes only a crude sexual insult will do the job, but our reader community determined the need for such an insult that carried no undue weight or implication of gender,” says Brown.

“For obvious reasons, this isn’t necessarily an easy thing to achieve. It has eluded well-meaning but foul-mouthed PC liberals for decades. But in conjoining the two time-honoured genitally-based insults, ‘twat’ and ‘cock’, Tom Beard has hewn something new and compelling from the original raw elements.”

    John Drinnan was unimpressed:

A sign of the times. In the online world the trendy folk of Public Address voted recently for a sexual insult "twatcock" as its word of the year.

I dont read the kind of material you offered in support of that - all I know is - it sounded right for here & I had never read it before (but as a writer, I would never claim outright ownership for a neologism - because someone is coining them, all the time-)

  • Hilary Stace,

On reflection, my personal word of the decade is 'autism'. Dominated the decade for me. PAS has also given it a bit of attention one way and another.
