  • Craig Ranapia, in reply to nzlemming,

Delaying the announcement of redrawn electorate boundaries as long as they did meant delaying selection of candidates for Labour, which is of no benefit to the left.

It's also meant "delays" for every other party, Mark. And here's a crazy idea, Mark: Perhaps its NOT the job of the Representation Commission to be of "benefit" to any party or faction? Nor is it their job to determine the internal affairs (including candidate selection) of Labour, National or any other party.

If you think otherwise, then you're welcome to lobby for relevant changes to the Electoral Act and best of luck to you!

The delay isn't caused by the Representation Commission, but by a decision of the Minister of Statistics and the Duties of Statutory Officers (Census and Other Remedial Provisions) Act, government legislation which set the date for the census as 2013, instead of 2011. Had the census not been delayed by the Government (and, you know, the Canterbury Earthquake), we'd have had the boundaries a couple of years ago.

Thank you, Graeme. Though I’m not blaming the RC for anything, you’re quite right on the points of fact. Even there, while there were plenty of arguments at the time that Williamson made the wrong call and passing the relevant legislation under urgency was bad process, I have serious doubts he was motivated by some cunning long con to screw up Labour’s candidate selections two general elections down the road. Nor am I seeing any credible evidence that the timetable this time around was cunningly contrived by the Government just to do over “the left”.
