I hope all the curmudgeonly old farts who go on about the RMA being a lot of PC lefty nonsense strangling all possible development will check this all out.

But isn't the irony that all this was a result of the Board of Inquiry, which was Joyce's bid to bypass the RMA? Or do I have this wrong?

  • davesparks,

Took the Alford Street bridge on my ride in this morning, was a nice cut of my least favourite bit - that run down around the corner Gt Nth Rd > NW Cycleway - and I reckon the meander thru Unitec to the crossing on Carrington is a mite flatter too.

From a purely selfish point of view I'll take the win. : )

  • Logan O'Callahan,

I'm looking forward to using the Alford St bridge for the next 8 weeks. I'll be cycling west from Pt Chev to New Lynn each morning, and it will cut off the lower part of Gt North Rd with that terrible piece of footpath.

Why do cycle ways meander, while roads take direct routes? We're not all out for a Sunday ramble. As a competitive route for commuter transport the routes need to be as efficient as the on-road alternative - direct and without unnecessary hills.

  • Stuart Young, in reply to Sam M,

I understand that the New Lynn to Avondale shared path has been delayed by the fact that Kiwirail vetoed a rail crossing at the junction with St Georges Road as too dangerous and the plans had to be redone, now with an underpass. That implies a major delay for the project and so I also understand that they do intend to do the first leg of it from Blockhouse Bay rd to Chalmers Reserve first. However as you say nothing has happened yet and so I'd question whether that will meet published dates.

I think that the entire urban cycle fund programme in Auckland was far too ambitious in terms of its timescale for delivery and this has been proven given that almost nothing has been delivered so far.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Took a ride with a Hamilton friend on Sunday, in light rain, before we set off to see Clara Bow at The Civic* Initially took a right at the Alford Street bridge and travelled as far as we could go (even skirted a barrier or two) but wished we could go further. Retraced 0ur route and circled above the tunnel and set out along the NW path to Te Atatu. Great riding along the fringes of the estuary and spotting the bird life. We will return once it is all finished.
*'As The It Girl in "It", with the Auckland Philharmonia and 2000+ happy patrons, Pretty saucy for a 1927 silent movie!
