Well I am in Taiwan right now - I'll have to try it when I get back home - looks like they have IP based blocking in place though.
Bollocks to that. This is simply industry inertia. Sony and the other major labels need to find a way to regionalise this kind of service.

Wittering. Sounds like a real word in the context you used it. But it isn't. I checked.
-
'Tis too!
Verb
to witter (third-person singular simple present witters, present participle wittering, simple past and past participle wittered)(intransitive) to speak at length on a trivial subject

Indeed. I was cut off from eMusic earlier this year. I received an email saying I was being deactivated as i was outside the US or Europe. An email to their support got no response.
The major labels really can't grizzle at all about piracy when they are responsible for this sort of artist unfriendly bullshit. If they can work out an IP address they can allocate income to the correct rights holders. It's lazy, and I feel no twinges of guilt about downloading illegally something they won't let me buy.
eMusic made a major mistake letting the big boys dictate a bunch of rules that ran counter to their core philosophy although I guess it's too early to work out whether it's had a negative effect, but I for one no longer bother to recommend them.

Live
Steve Abel and the Chrysalids - The Cabana (Napier)
Only about 25 punters showed up for this show but most of them purchased a copy of Flax Happy on the way out. A spell binding performance. There can be something really special about a show where hardly anyone has turned up but everyone's up for it. Big ups to Steve for making that work. Sending 25 people away happy one night in Napier is a win for music.

Lurker? Who's that?
And yes, that was me saying hi to RB and then taking off. I was just too tired from uni to interact with people. I guess that how I describe my 2009...
And for music, this one had me in tears.

My faves for this year was that tune by what's his name, you know, the one that goes "bin diddy bing bing doo wop wop" or something (not very good at remembering stuff)
But I can recommend this, not a tune but a BBC Radio 4 comedy show.
Thanks to my mate James Liddell for that and thanks to you all for just being you all, annat, innit.

I was really satisfied to send a copy of "My First Stabbing" signed by David Haywood and addressed correctly to my bro, (the recipient) as well as a "Stroke" cd, over to Seattle today as a not forgotten, belated birthday/Xmas pressy. He also got a "Where The Wild Things Are" Puppet.(you had to be there in about 1972 to understand so.) This year has been great for the PAS book collection, and Chris Knox's lyrics to travel. I've also really enjoyed Media 7 and Wallace's Back Benches ( in case Damian is around to read) Plus thanks to PAS, Malcolm showed us the Civic, that was great.Felt so priviledged. Actually all the partying courtesy of RB has been great fun and really cheap so I am very happy 'bout it. All good. :)
So RB, what's up for NYE.It's my birthday. -

I'll email you about that.

You guys hear about this great new song called Killing in the Name by RATM?
-
Hope Sandoval & the Warm Intentions is great. Her latest with Massive Attack is also mind numbingly good. NSFW Video here, for those who missed it elsewhere.
Fuck me that's beautiful. Ta for that.

Sacha, your recommendation came with a stuck full screen computer, with t'other half saying " I can't exit ". It was certainly very cool, in a nsfw kinda way. Excelllent.
Cheers. -
Thanks to all PAS contributors for an interesting year. I am awe of your writing and it's a privilege to read everybodies thoughts and ideas.
Also loved Rosie Tin Tea Caddy, who we were lucky enough to see in the flesh at The Lounge in Carterton.
I was lucky enough to see them also at a private function for Mr Teacaddy's mum's 60th birthday at The Paper Mulberry Cafe in Central HB. Great stuff. Other great gigs this year-Ryan Adams, John Doe/Jim White, Vic Chestnutt/Victoria Williams, Lucinda Williams, Lloyd Cole at Napier's Cabana.
Favourites for me this year have been mainly in the Americana area-Chuck Prophet, Jay Farrar and Ben Gibberd, Justin Townes Earle, Wilco, Son Volt, Guy Clark, Dylan, Neko Case, Eels, Levon Helm, Richmond Fontaine.
Reissues-Neil's Archives and the Beatles remasters.
Locally-Don McGlashan and just got Stroke which on first listen is fantastic. -
Top 5s? I love em...
this year I have been loving;
1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
2. Lawrence Arabia - Chant Darling
3. Atlas Sound - Logos
4. Flaming Lips - Embryonic
5. Bon Iver - Blood Bankbest track AND video
Röyksopp feat. Fever Ray - This Must Be Itthing I'm looking forward to in 2010 CONAN MOCKASINS ALBUM!!!! What I have heard off it is just amazing.
And Russell, we actually made it to 5 on that chart, so thank you and the other tweeters very much, it fun to change the internets.I am very happy that Roger has FN back, its been a long time coming. For a while it seemed like he would be doing it with the great people from Arch Hill, and honestly and I think that could have been great. Considering they have been releasing The Clean, Bats, David Kilgour etc...but regardless this is a great thing for NZ music and I wish Roger all the best.

Alan P......are you from Paeroa?
Nope, from Auckland... West... Glen Eden originally.
But I'm almost normal, I promise. -
This (and the whole album it's from) has been rocking my whole family's world lately - anything that my father, my kids and I can all agree on has got to be good.
-
"Are you....from Paeroa?"
We haz winner for worst pun contender (ignored category.)

LOL - how the fuck did I miss that? I've even thought about that correlation myself in the past. Guess you get used to living with a name.

Happy Xmas, y'all. Peace on earth, goodwill, etc.
My album of the year. The Underfall Yard, by Big Big Train.
I share this especially with those of you who know that progressive rock never, ever became uncool. I'm sure there's at least one of you out there...somewhere!
This album makes me homesick for England, which I never, ever thought would happen. I used to live near, and visit a lot of the places about which the songs are written. It's like a history lesson about the best bits of the South West UK for me. Oh, and the music's sublime too!
-
Some really good choices by you all, clearly there's some stuff I need to pick up too.
Mos Def- The Ecstatic: Thinking person's hiphop from a very cool dude.
I've kinda lost track of him, though to be fair he hasn't really been that active musically since he branched out and became a very likeable actor. But what I've heard sounds great, and it's got a cool cover too (which features a still from Charles Burnett's seminal The Killer of Sheep). Raekwon's Only Built for Cuban Linx 2 has been getting raves too, so I'd be keen to give that a whirl, as it's not often that a sequel matches up to the original, particularly when the original seriously changed the game (as Jay-Z has discovered with the second and third parts of The Blueprint).
Oh, and happy xmas all! Hope to see some of you up north, or even in ChCh over the break.
Oh and it's good to hear that Roger Shepherd has bought back Flying Nun. Hopefully that means someone will do a decent reissue program- what, we can dream, right?
-

Yeah, it's a great song. Here's the original Kristin Hersh version, which oddly enough I was listening to over and over again this morning. Synchronicity, I tells ya:
-
Saw Roger Shepherd tonight, and confirmed that it is indeed a 100% acquisition of Flying Nun, with Warner distribution in New Zealand as part of the deal.
The rather odd nature of the announcement was because Warners corporate in the US just bunged out a press release -- Roger didn't even know it was going to be announced. He did speak well of the Warner NZ people who made it happen.

My guess is that it's going to take a while to get up to speed with rights to recordings -- the anniversary box set was quite a mission to clear. But it goes without saying that there will be intelligent re-releases.

lol @ the notion of real words and made-up words.
